[Pro] Table problems

Is there a problem with making and adjusting tables in Freeway?
I had loads of problems adjusting the size of tables.
To try and see what is going wrong, I have made a new local website using V6.0.7 build 6782
Using a blank page, I made a simple 2x2 grid and then joined the top two cells horizontally. On resizing the top cell, it changes to a completely different size!
So. I tried the same test on my MBP running v6.0.4 and the same thing happens!
Has any body go any ideas please?

Thank you

I have used tables a lot in FW over the years and found they have always been temperamental creatures. The problem you are having is one of the issues I have had from way back in FW.

I have found it helpful to:

  1. Think about the table column cell count needed before creating the table
  2. Create the table
  3. Adjust the size of the column widths
  4. Join cells after the table size has been set

I know there are always time when a table would need to be adjusted after having done the above, I have always managed to do that if at times with more than a little frustration. I have also found that when I have made changes and then on adding rows or columns only to find that there is an issue is simply to delete the problematic row and duplicate the one above or below, this tends to illiminate some of the problems.

Another solution I have found is to split the table, one below the other. This is not a great solution to be honest as it can be complicated trying to keep on top of the two sitting nicely together but in some situations I didn’t have any other option.

I know you pain, wait until the table needs to be quite complicated!!! but in all honesty I now look at avoiding using tables that are * overly * complicated.

Hi Mike,
I have always used tables and never had any problems, until today!
It doesn’t get much simpler than a 2 x 2 grid that won’t behave when making modifications to it!
At least I have the knowledge that I do not appear to be alone.

Many thanks

David

My experience has been the more complicated the table layout the more problems that tend to arise.

I agree, It does seem strange that you are having problems in a table this simple though.

As I have had the same trouble on two separate machines running two different versions of Freeway, I can only assume that there is a problem with Freeway?

Not likely. A table will always collapse to the size of its content, unless you have reinforced its structure with graphics or other non-flexible content. This has nothing to do with Freeway. If you are using a table-based layout, Freeway will reinforce the layout tables with 2px tall / wide cells filled with clear GIF images. But this does not apply to tables drawn with the table tool. You can duplicate the same trick that Freeway uses by inserting inline empty graphic boxes, sized to suit the layout. You may (probably should) need to add an otherwise empty row/column to hold these.

I must be dense - how do you split and/or combine cells in FW?

Sorry for asking this - I should have read other posts first - just found the answer in another post - Item - Tables - Split Cells.

Click on the first cell, then shift-click on the next one over or down or up. While the two cells are both selected, press Command + Delete. The first cell you clicked on will be increased by whatever width or height is allowed by the second (or nth) cell you clicked on. IMPORTANT: only the content of the first cell you clicked on will be preserved in this process, so it is best if you do this before you have added content, not after.

Pro tip: if you are trying to delete a bunch of rows/columns from a table, rather than click-click-clicking on each cell and deleting it, click on the top-left cell from the area where you are trying to delete, then shift-click on the bottom-right cell. Command-delete, then delete.
