If you’re using this list via e-mail then you see all e-mail addresses
in clear text. (It’s a members-only authenticated list, the chance /
cost of scraping is low.) If you’re on the Web view, all e-mail
addresses that appear in plain text are converted by the formatter
into the literal string email@hidden and so nobody who is looking at
the Web version of the list, either a logged-in user or a random 'bot,
can read anything except that. If you want to expose your e-mail
address to the list, there are two ways to accomplish this.
The Secure Way: Click on the My Account tab, and look in the many
many controls. There is a small textarea called Contact Info. If you
type in your e-mail address there (and update your preferences,
naturally), other members can see it, as long as they are logged in,
and as long as they know to click on your name at the top-left of any
message you have written.
The (Mmmmmmm! SPAM!) Way: Type in your e-mail address, substituting
the following three characters for the @ sign: Left Parenthesis, Lower-
case A, Right Parenthesis. All three characters must touch one
another, and they will be replaced by a literal @ sign. The result
will not be encoded or otherwise restricted from view. Anyone, public
or private, can read this address using automated means. I use this
method when showing a code example, primarily, and always stick to
addresses in the example.com domain, which is actually reserved for
this very purpose (and gets a lot of mail, all of which gets routed
to /dev/null).
