OK folks! One of my customers has asked for Tag Clouds on a new web site. What are they and can I do them in Freeway Pro?
Also, they want to hold a quiz on the site. What might be the best way to do that?

Tag clouds are/were a way to indicate the relative popularity of individual tags. Tags are a way of self-organizing information in an informal “folksonomy”. As contrasted with a rigid taxonomy, where you come up with all the categories before-hand, and require each article to live in one category, a tagging system allows each article to be in as many different tags as it deserves, and is an open-ended solution to the organization problem, because you can add tags on an ad-hoc basis.
Back to the cloud – you will have seen these things, they are often a jumble of linked words, some larger than others, and the size of each tag tells you which one is more popular – which tag has more articles assigned to it. Here’s one I built many years ago: http://goodserviceguide.com and looking at that I can see that plumbers and general contractors are about equally important, while structural solutions seems to be the least. I guess everyone in the Bay area have already shored up their foundations, and are now refitting their bathrooms.
To build a tag cloud, you first have to have tags. Then the math to calculate the relative importance of each tag is pretty simple. The major blogging systems all support tags, and if you’re building a CMS-backed site, it’s often simple to add. But if you’re building a static site, or using a non-database CMS like WebYep, then you’re not going to find an easy solution.
As for the quiz, I would look at SurveyMonkey and see if they have an embed-able form of their service. I have to imagine they do. You could then put that into an iframe. Failing that, there are hundreds of quiz scripts at HotScripts.com and many are free.

Thanks Waltd. I can see your example working but honestly don’t have a clue about it! Seeing as it will be a static site, I’m going to talk them out of it!
