[Pro] telephone recognition

I like the telephone number recognition aspect in the “mobile” settings…

But I notice on an iPad & other tablets without cellular capability – this feature activates the default IM app of the device.

Is there a way to prevent that aspect of the function. Sending a text to an 800 number will likely not be seen by the end user.

many thanks

As far as I know, no it cannot. The tel: microformat recognition is built into the browser, and the browser cannot tell when it is being run by hardware without phone capability. Unless you were to do something horribly fragile like sniff the browser’s device signature and compare the name against a “whitelist” of known phones, you really can’t do this sort of thing.

What I do is enter a character between the numbers. Could be a dash for
example. The browser recognizes it no longer as a telephone number. If you
don’t want to show that character give it the color of the background. I
had often that on a dark background the telephone number became ‘link-blue’
and wasn’t legible anymore.

You can turn off the whole thing in the Page Inspector. Very bottom of the Output tab, uncheck Automatic Telephone Number Detection.

Okay Many thanks… Guess it’s the nature of the beast and cannot be done. I still want a phone # to be dialed… just not a text sent… so I’ll leave it as is.
