Hi Wilson,
Although the ticker on the Softpress home page wasn’t added using an Action I’ve create one based on the same code.
You can download the action here;
http://www.actionsforge.com/actions/view/217-webticker
Regards,
Tim.

I downloaded the Ticker action. The appearance of this action was quite timely – it’s something I could really use for an idea I have.
But where is it? I installed it and the action list from the Edit menu in FW shows it’s there and the check box is ticked. It’s in the user folder >general, right between the Mal’s E-commerce suite and the PHP feedback form in the Item menu. But when I have the item selected (an html box that has the text) it’s not in the menu. The only thing I see that’s different is that the little icon next to it is not the yellow one with the black f in it.
Thanks,
Martin

I also tried it, as it is pertinent to a site renewal, but it doesn’t ‘tick’ - just shows all the copy inserted.
Also noted that it bears a TextWrangler document icon but opens in Numbers!
Looking forward to an update.

Hi Colin,
I’ve updated the Action to version 0.2 (http://actionsforge.com/actions/view/217-webticker) mainly simply to encode it so you don’t get issues with file associations like this.
If you are still having issues with this version of the Action please send me an email with a link to a page where I can see your page.
Regards,
Tim.

Weird. I insert and HTML item, select it, but no webticker action appears in the list? It is installed as I can see it in the ‘Actions List’ but when I select the item itself, it’s not there.

Hi Nathan,
I’ve been playing with this also - and found the same situation - just make sure that your HTML item is layered - then check!
I’m trying to insert the action into a HTML 3.2 file that i use to send e-mails - but 3.2 will not accept layered items.
Hope this helps.

All “tickety-boo” now. I realised that Overflow had to be set to Hidden for it to work as expected.

I may come back to that action when I have time as there are a number of things that could be improved from a code standpoint. At the moment you are restricted to a single ticker on each page which, although understandable, is a bit odd. The code could really do with wrapping up as a function so regardless of how many of these things you have the site would only use the single instance of the code.
What you see in the action at the moment is simply a action-ized version of the original ticker code.
At the moment that work is ear marked for ‘the future’.
Regard,
Tim.

Perhaps for the not too distant future, please! Thanks for the Action anyway - it’s already useful to me. Just one comment, as it stands: a little more control over speed would help - 1 & 2 are OK, but could do with a step in between and 3-5 quickly get a little too fast for my ageing eyes (and brain).

Yep it is a layer.
My page was set for XHTML instead of HTML which was stopping the action from working.

Sure. I originally had the slider go from 1 to 100 until I realised that anything over 5 was just a blur!

Hi Nathan,
Try version 0.3 - http://actionsforge.com/actions/view/217-webticker
(I’m hoping to fill all 5 “What’s new” slots on the Actions Forge home page by the end of the day!)

Tim.

In Firefox, I only see the very tops of the words. They are not centered in the white area.

Thanks for pointing that out, Bob. Made me check Opera where it doesn’t show at all and in IE on a PC it just doesn’t ‘ticker’ (stays static).
My - and probably Tim’s - euphoria of this morning, now a deflated balloon. But then, in fairness to Tim, it was only a quick Action wrapper and there were areas of the code he said he wanted to look at again.
I still look forward to a future version though, when he has time.

After reading this I checked IE and it was “tickering” just fine. It’s IE7 on Windows Vista. The only problem was that the field itself was positioned a bit over to the left from where it’s positioned in Safari on my Mac. But if it doesn’t ‘ticker’ on other versions of IE and/or Windows, I guess I’d better not use it. Bummer. I was feeling rather euphoric myself.

Is it difficult to make the action usable with FW 3.5?
