I’m meeting with one of my clients next week to review a new website I’ll be designing for his company, which is a new home builder. Over the past several years he’s taken hundreds of photographs of the various models his company builds, as well as open houses, construction phases, contractors, and personnel.

After some discussion, we felt the best way to review, select, and transfer the images (which are on his laptop) was a physical meeting at my office.

In terms of logistics, what’s the best way to connect and transfer the images on his Windows based laptop to my Mac Pro? I have both a wired Ethernet connection and an Airport Extreme, but I know very little about the Windows OS.

I wouldn’t try to get into networking the two without some serious tech chops on both sides. Just get a cheap USB drive and do things via “sneaker-net”. For way less than you charge for an hour, you can get a terabyte disk at the nearest office supply store, which will also have other uses when this client is done fiddling with photos.

Walter, thanks for jumping starting my brain. 🙂

I should have thought of that. I actually have an external Firewire drive I use for capturing video from my videographer when we’re doing TV commercials, so that’s work perfectly.

Check that your client has a firewire port on their machine. Although once popular on Macs I’ve never seen a regular firewire port on a Windows laptop before. You’ll also want to check that the drive is formatted in a Windows-friendly format (FAT32 for example).
Personally I would get a USB pen or 2.5" drive rather than risk using your existing firewire one.
Regards,
Tim.

Whatever solution, usb thumb or usb drive, keep in mind that you will have
to format it for pc. This can be done on mac via Disk Utility. Modern macs
read pc formats. Modern pc’s do not.

You may also want to prepare your filenames for the pc as Windows has been
known to truncate long mac filenames and does not know what to do with
filenames that have no extension. Make sure your mac files have extensions
and fairly short names that only begin with letters or numbers. You may use
a batch name utility like this

As further a precaution, I would make spaces into underscores or hyphens,
but only as I’m paranoid 🙂

Yes, I use that too, but the other solutions are probably better since we need to review the images anyway.

Dropbox and services like that are wonderful, and I use them happily as well – file naming conventions are still relevant, though. Time may also be a factor, as images can be large to upload then download… depends on how slow or fast USB is, or if you exceed your Dropbox allotment.

Many choices for transport – file names still the major issue IMO.

My vote is also for a cheap pen/flash drive ie 32Gb - $20 from Amazon
