[Pro] Upgrading

Getting very close to upgrading from 3.5…I know, I know, about time, you say!!

A couple of things:

  • will it definitely be able to open all my old version 3 sites without a problem?

  • does it have a site map function of any kind? I’d love to be able to both a) make an automatic site map for web use, and b) print out a list of all the pages in my site.

  • there’s probably a shift towards CSS in version 5, but are tables better implemented (and better behaved!) than they were in version 3? I’m still strongly table oriented.

Anyone have any comments on these points I’d welcome them.

Many thanks
Hugh

Hi Hugh
It will open them but there will be some checking through and tidying up to
do. There are steps somewhere in the KB that Paul - I think suggested to run
on a 3.5 site before upgrading to 4 (I don’t know if there is any reason to
not go straight to 5 or to go via 4?)

Yes there is a site map action and you can exclude pages from this via
naming convention. You can print the web page it makes.

You can continue in table land by keeping the CSS button off but the methods
and ways of styles is much broader ranging - ie - text styles can be applied
to items - not just text. And the hierarchy of priority of styles isn’t
obvious - to me anyway - so I keep the style inspector close by with all
applications and changes of style.

It will be a temptation to get cross when it doesn’t do what you want
but then you knew that didn’t you!

all the best
Brian

Thanks Brian!

Err, yes…I probably will get cross. But you knew that, too !!

OK, will check what the version 3 transfer procedure is with KB.

I wonder if anyone knows a reason not to go straight to 5…? Would hate to do it ad then find I should have gone via 4…

I recently took 2 sites straight from 3 to 5 and got through ok.
While doing it I spent a l o ong time sorting styles out.
getting links to work as I wanted, repositioning overlapping items.
I know there are other posts that have dealt with upgrading sites but I
haven’t got a handle on them here now.
