[Pro] Uploading a FW Blog Template to Google Blogspot

I am close to putting a gun to my head (loaded I might add). Could someone help with the process of uploading a blogger template to Google blogspot. I have created the blog template as per the video tutorial and it’s ready and waiting, but I cannot tell what address information to put in what boxes. Do I have to set up web hosting on mobile me using the “blogspot” domain name before I can proceed (not explained in the tutorial)? If someone could offer a more detailed version of the upload process I would be forever indebted. I have been at this for almost 7 hours. I’m going to go work on a painting, something that doesn’t require that I stare at a plastic screen or hold a “mouse”.

Hi Bob,

The reason you need to upload the site is so that the images you use in the template are online somewhere (there’s no place on blogspot to host them so you need to use your own web space). The template that you create with the Blogger Actions then puts a little code into the template that tells the browser where your images are. This webspace can be anywhere really, MobileMe, or some regular hosting.

Wherever you put this online is what you need to put in the Web Address field of your Upload dialog, so if you upload it to the root folder of your web hosting you would just put your web address (such as http://example.com). If you upload it into a folder called blog then you would put your web address plus the folder (so http://example.com/blog). If you upload to MobileMe then you would put the web address of the page without the actual page itself (such as http://web.me.com/username/folder).

Once you’ve done this, make sure your Blogger account is set to use blogspot publishing in the Publishing section of the Settings and then paste your template into the Edit HTML section.

That should be it!

Joe

Hi Guys,

Any suggestions for a Mac friendly Web Hosting Co, able to offer a Mac friendly Dedicated Server Packlage, either UK based, or over the pond. Every enquiry I have made so far seems to be either Windows or Linux equipped, about which I know de nada.

Many thanks

Lots more but it’s a start. Take a good look at Server Logistics.

Mac hosting does exist but, in the US, it’s very costly in comparison
to linux. We’re all mac ourselves and find the linux hosting control
panel to be very easy to use.

Well, your /server/ should be Linux or Unix or Solaris, never Windows.
There are a few Mac-based servers out there, but that’s a fairly
esoteric thing, and priced accordingly.

The reason to run a Mac server is if you need some framework on your
server that cannot reasonably run on any other server OS. Maybe
something that uses the foundation frameworks of Mac OS for some
special purpose, like maybe color-correcting images on the server or
whatnot.

Mac-friendly is another matter, and more to do with customer service
and documentation than the underlying server OS. Macs ARE Unix servers
themselves, but they have a nice candy shell that keeps you from being
scared by the tens of thousands of tiny text files that are the OS.

There are two people on this list who offer not only Mac-friendly but
Freeway-friendly hosting. In the UK, David Owens at http://ineedwebhosting.co.uk
and in Canada, James Wilkinson at http://have-host.com

There may be more, but those are the two off the top of my head. If
you really need Mac-based hosting, then there’s http://macminicolo.com
and http://serverlogistics.com for that. There are probably others,
but again, those are the two I can recall off-hand.

Hi Neil

If you contact me off list, or use the contact form on our site, I can talk to you about the dedicated ‘linux’ server packages we offer. Dedicated Servers are not currently listed on the http:/www.ineedwebhosting.co.uk site

Hi Guys,

In answer to Walter’s queries, my problem is that I don’t know enough about the requirements for hosting a phpBB3 Forum to ask the questions to find the answers I need. My knowledge of the Windows & Linux operating systems is probably worse than zero, and I have no idea if I need to have any Windows knowledge to administrate a Forum hosted on a Windows Server, hence my query about Mac Dedicated Servers.

Presently while I come up to speed, I have an offline version of the Forum hosted here on my Mac, so once I’m, more or less, up to speed with a php Forum and hopefully capable of administrating the Forum itself, would I then have additional problems if it were in fact hosted via Windows server. I have been hosting a number of my Freeway sites over a number of years via OneandOne, who so not support the Mac in any way, and have had no problems, as of course all the Freeway work is done locally, before uploading. I realise this is different from administering a Forum on-line, but presumably Admin Access works whatever the server platform?

As I said, not sure how to ask the questions, but hopefully you guys can supply the answers.

Many thanks

Neil

Neil,

Installing phpBB3 is easy on our hosting packages. After ordering a hosting package you just one click install from phpBB3 icon in hosting panel and follow the instructions.

Take a free test drive to try it out from our site.

phpBB is a PHP application, which means it will run on any server that
has the Apache / MySQL / PHP stack installed. That could be a Windows
server, but in my book, Windows Server is an oxymoron. Yes it might
work fine. But you will find yourself debugging something that
should work and doesn’t, and the answer you will come to in the end
is that you are trying to run it on Windows.

As far as administering a bulletin board goes, there’s really nothing
to do on the server about that. Assuming that everything runs
correctly (and there are fairly modern versions of all the necessary
libraries and server applications) then it just works, for months or
years at a time.

The database is installed, the configuration settings are made in a
Web control panel, the bulletin board is viewed by public users, any
admin tasks are done through a secure page in that public site. You
need a browser, and little else, to run such a system.
