[Pro] Uploading New Site Over Old

Hi All,

I just recreated my website and uploaded it to my web host. My mistake
is that I assumed the old site would be overwritten with the new site.
Now I have a messed up mix of old and new. Can anyone guide me through
the necessary steps to get this sorted out? Thanks!

Here’s an update on my problem: I went into my website control panel
and manually deleted the old files. That seems to have fixed things. Is
there any reason this could cause a problem I’m not aware of? I’ve
always heard that removing files required an FTP application.

I can`t really grab your problem that time - but let me say it that way:

What is once uploaded to your ftp will remain there and you have to delete it manually from your host using an ftp-client.

Short said:

if your old “start-page” was named:

http:yourdomain.com/home.html

and your new for ex.

http:yourdomain.com/index.html

both will remain on your host. Only these pages that where named the same in new and old will be substituted by just uploading.

means:

delete manually from host via ftp-client (for example cyberduck). By the way - I can`t imagine a life without ftp-client

sorry - the second sentence should be:

“What is once uploaded to your host …”

This forum should have an “edit-function”.

Hi Richard

There is nothing wrong with what you did, so long as your site is now working as you expect it too (all pages present and correct) then you’re fine.

As for FTP, it is simply easier and quicker to use than the control panel, but in this instance it would perform exactly the same function.

As Thomas has explained, your new home page should be named index.html just as your last one was, so when you upload the new it will overwrite the old.

Thanks Tony and Thomas. I tried using an FTP application at first
(RBrowser), but couldn’t get it to log onto my site’s server. I kept
getting an “Error 3” dialog. I have no idea what that means. I’m
wondering if something other than RBrowser would get the job done.

This “forum” is a mailing list, and you can’t edit mail messages after you send them. Sorry.

Thanks David, I’ll look into them. Since I only use an FTP app less
than once per year, the free Cyberduck looks attractive.
