[Pro] Using OpenX with Freeway Pro

I’m rebuilding a web site that uses OpenX to serve ads into various places on each page. I didn’t build the original site, but the owner (my wife!) needs to keep using OpenX rather than just placing ads on a one-by-one basis.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Can I use an HTML object to establish the “zones” that OpenX requires?

Thanks.

Hi Jon,
Looking at the intro video about OpenX at
http://www.openx.org/docs/tutorials/video/getting+started+with+openx I can see
that you can copy and paste the required code directly into your Freeway pages
in one of two ways;

  1. For a single ad zone you can click on the Invocation code link and copy the
    code from there or,
  2. Go to the Invocation code tab on the website link at the top of the OpenX
    page
    Once you have the code you just need to insert it into the correct location on
    your Freeway page. It looks like the code will be split into two sections; one
    that lives in the page head and the other where the ad is to be placed.
    Copy the code for the page head and in Freeway select;
    HTML Markup from the Page menu and choose ‘before /head’ in the drop down menu
    Paste your code and hit OK.

For the code that displays the ad itself go to Markup Item from the Insert menu
and paste the ad code in the dialog. Click OK and size and place the box where
you want the ad to appear in your layout.

You should be done.
I’ve never worked with OpenX before so forgive me if I’ve missed something.
All the best,
Tim.

Thanks, Tim –

I’ll give it a shot and report back. Maybe I can become an expert in something…

As a sort of related question.

Would you recommend this service? Do a-lot of people use it? Are there others? Is it reliable?

I have a client who runs ads on their site, but right now they’re static and are being tracked through Google, would this provide an equal alternative?

Here’s my wife on the subject…

I really don’t know anything about Google, unless you’re talking about Google Adsense. OpenX is different in that you can use your own ads, in addition to Google Adsense ads. You can control all the ads from one control panel, make the ads rotate, and set them up for a number of impressions or for a specific time period. You can also weight the ads. And you can get all kinds of stats on the ads: clicks, impressions, etc. If you go to the OpenX web site, they’ll give you all the details.
