[Pro] video stream

Hi guys,

Imagine that i create a page containing some video instructionclips and i use Vibaralogix Sitelok and the Freeway plug-inn to create a membership part.

Is there an Action that makes:

a) Playing video possible
b) Downloading video impossible
c) Linkforwarding or Copy-ing URL impossible

Thanks in advance,

Roger

The Linklok people may have some suggestions regarding where you store the “protected” content, I haven’t used that service before, but it should be possible – this is why that product exists.

As far as the rest goes, absent any server-side session-based security on the video file itself, any browser that can display a video can save it to disk – it has to in order to play the thing at all. Even if you add the kiosk mode flag to your video tag, which keeps the browser from allowing “Save as…” on the video, the file is stored in the browser’s cache, and a reasonably motivated thief can easily extract it from there.

There are “streaming video” solutions that explicitly do not allow any form of saving (even to cache), and you may want to investigate those, but they tend to restrict the platform to desktop browsers. Apple does have the QuickTime Streaming Server, which is completely cross-platform, and I happen to know that Dreamhost includes it for free with their shared hosting setups. You will need to encode your videos for that delivery platform, and the QuickTime Pro software from Apple ($29) is the easiest way to do that. I haven’t tried to embed a QTSS video in Freeway, you may need to use a Markup Item to get the code in place.
