[Pro] Website causing domain to disconnect?

In response to a question about simple site search I raised yesterday, I followed Tim Plumb’s advice which solved that problem but has now raised another one (hence the new thread).

I’ve done as he suggested and split the site into four, (home page and sections 1-3). I’ve uploaded the site into a single folder with sections 1-3 being sub folders of the home page folder, and with each folder containing an index.html file (4 in total).

Now the problems start!

Everything appeared to be working okay, but when testing the links between the 4 ‘sites’ I occasionally got a ‘you don’t have permission’ message when clicking on some links, this would appear a couple of times before I got a message that Safari could not connect to the server. Firefox the same. The site is hosted with 1&1 so I tested other sites hosted for us by them - I couldn’t connect to them either. Cyberduck also couldn’t connect to our webspace.

I had assumed it was a temporary glitch with 1&1 when I was able to connect again later, but this morning I have the same problem again - it starts with the permissions error and ends with me not being able to connect to any of our 1&1 sites from my machine.

1&1 say everything appears to be fine at their end, so I’m at a loss. Is it my machine, the connection or 1&1? Is it anything to do with the way I’ve constructed the site that is making my machine throw a wobbler?

Any help gratefully appreciated

Neil

Hi Neil,
What is the URL of the site?
Does the site span secure and non-secure areas? Assuming the links from Freeway document (section) to other Freeway document (section) are full and absolute I would have thought you should be fine.
Regards,
Tim.

Hi Tim

I think I’ve sorted it. One of the site to site links on two of the sites were ftp instead of http, which caused the permissions error, and when I kept trying it, appears to have caused my computer not to like 1&1 at all! I don’t understand why it would cause such a reaction but now I’ve fixed the links, it appears to be behaving again.

The SSS now works far better though!

Thanks

Hi Neil,
Yes, having the wrong protocol in the links would cause the browser to try and connect to the address using FTP (for example) which in turn is throwing the error. I’m glad you got this all sorted out.
Regards,
Tim.
