[Pro] Website Semantics?

Hey guys, I’m getting a 404 error that states this URL is not found: http://www.morethancakeonline.com/contact.htm

I never use .htm files in my websites and contact.htm is not a filename that I remember creating. What’s the best way to track down where this is coming from?

Don’t forget that spammers and crackers often target “common” filenames as part of their auto-discovery. If they find a form at a known address (like any number of requests for /users/admin/login or /administrator/index2.php or similar) they will then try to break into it using a dictionary attack or fuzzing or any number of other tricks. If you have the raw server logs, you can see the IP address that was used to request the page, but that will probably not do you any good, because often these attacks come from “botnet armies” of compromised Windows PCs, and the IP address is spoofed as well. Finding the actual sender is NSA-level hard.

So should I be worried about this?

No more worried than usual. If they get a 404, they’ll move on, generally. Even botnet armies don’t like to waste their time.

the first thing to check is the filename in your FWP file. It’s easier than
you think to accidentally tab into those impossibly small text boxes and
change something without noticing. Also, look at the filename in your
Output folder - often I will check my filenames there instead of the
aforementioned impossibly small boxes.

Yes, that was the first thing I did, but I don’t see the link anywhere in the filename or the site code. Weird. I guess I’ll need to look harder.

Okay, I think I figured out the problem. I moved my clients website from servers located in the UK to GoDaddy servers in the US.

Apparently, Google is picking up remnants of the old site. Not sure why. I’m assuming everything will eventually right itself, but is there anything I can do to help with that process?
