[Pro] Where do Cookies from my Site come from?

Hello,
I have redesigned a website. To see how it looked in other browsers I use Browsershots.org which sends me screenshots of how a page looks on other machines and different browsers. A good service. However, I was a little alarmed when a warning window had come up on a Windows machine running IE5 saying “You have received a cookie from lyrics-for-music.org. Do you want to accept.” I have not any cookies in my site, I don’t even know how to embed one, so where does this come from? Neither is there any music on any of the pages. My site in question is www.sensual-photos.com.
Any suggestions welcome.

I’m afraid this has nothing to do with your problem, but I noticed on
your ‘What is Art’ page, it starts with the phrase: “Since time
memorial this is a question”. The actual phrase is: “Since time
immemorial”.

best wishes,

Hello! Hello? So nobody has any suggestions how come my site is generating cookies I know nothing about? Jon

Strictly speaking, your site can only issue cookies that you know
about. Unless your ISP does something like banner injection or frame-
wrapping (on their server) that you don’t control, your site will
contain precisely what you put into it.

If you use an ad service like DoubleClick or Google Ads, they will
definitely send a cookie along with the ad they serve, but you didn’t
say that you were doing anything like that.

There’s one other thing that could be happening here. There was a rash
of server virus infections a few years ago, and one of the symptoms
was that sites would serve random images above the HTML. But this was
short-lived, as everybody figured out how to disinfect their servers.
I suppose it could be another wave of that.

Walter, Thank you for responding. Muchly appreciated.

I don’t have any of the outside services you suggest. I recently added a fill in form managed by emailmeform.com and also I have a weather forecast from Accuweather, but nothing that is associated with this music lyric site.

Then, if someone has managed to make my site issue a cookie, where, and how do I look to find out?

Thanks,
Jon

You need to visit the site with Firefox, with the Firebug extension
installed and active. Click on the little green checkmark in the
bottom right corner of your browser window to open the debugger, then
click on the Net tab. That will show you all of the resources being
requested by your page, and you can click on each one for more detail.
Your weather forecast may embed ads, likewise your emailforme service,
neither of which would be under your control. If you see a cookie
actually being requested by your server, then you need to file a
support ticket with your hosting provider and give them screenshots of
the Firebug console to start investigating.

I have just discovered the same thing with a site I am designing myself. I have definitely not set any cookies and I wouldn’t know how to, but when checking in Omni Web, sure enough the site is placing a cookie and I’d like to know what this is about. I wondered at first if it might have been something to do with the iPhone compatibility, but after reading this is seems unlikely.

I have one of those share buttons from addthis.com and I wonder if the cookie is coming from there.

Any time you add content from another server like that, that server
can push any cookies they like along with the script or button or what-
have-you.
