Problems moving Rollovers

Hi All:

I have problems moving rollovers, and also although I have locked the image behind them it still appears inside the rollover action.

Thanks,

Alex N.

Locking something on the page simply prevents it from being moves
with the mouse, it doesn’t hide it from use by different output
features. Just make sure that it is or isn’t included in each
different rollover state, as appropriate.

Moving rollovers can be a little awkward sometimes. That’s because
they are normally built from a simple stack of items, and those items
need to be selected together before they are moved.

Try click-dragging across the set of items to select everything. Or
use the command-option (Apple and Alt keys) trick for clicking
through a stack of objects - but with the shift key held down as well
so you keep the previously selected item selected.

Then drag the set of items or use the arrow keys to nudge them around.

You can also group the rollover items together; they’ll be held
within a container object, and you can then grab and drag that object

  • but by the edge only or you’ll be reaching ‘inside’ to the items
    again.

Hi all, I am having this problem also. (similar, anyhow)

My page has several background images…a graduated screen box (that has an animated gif as a separate header)…and another box I am using over the background box (this box will visually contain my text, etc (I word it that way, because I am NOT importing anything into this box. I am JUST using it as a design element…just trying to save us from confusion!)

I grouped my rollover images, then used the rollover action. As soon as I group the images and add the rollover action, a red box outlines the rollover and I cannot move the rollover or duplicate it. (the duplicate command gives me an error message that this would “position my items off the pasteboard”…even if I duplicate just 1 item with 10-pixel offset.)

I must be doing something wrong, I know, but I have not been able to figure out what it is…I have looked through the Forums and read the manuals. I have watched Freeway moments…I wish there was an full online course for Freeway Pro…I would surely use it!

I suspect that my problem lies somewhere with the combine graphics/layers concepts. I think I am missing something about the proper way to structure a Freeway page.

My rollover consists of psd files which each are named differently and have type/shapes in different colors. I imported, stacked, grouped and applied the rollover.

Is it possible that I can’t use native psds this way?

Is there a simple step by step procedure to create and duplicate my rollovers, swapping out the different images for the separate menu items?

Thanks for any help you can give!
Helen
PS–Alex, I apologize if I have hijacked your thread…I just thought it would be good to keep these issues in one thread…I’ll be happy to start a new one if that’s an issue!

Hi guys,

I would highly recommend taking a look at the Rollover QuickTime
tutorial if you haven’t already:

Thanks Joe…I watched them both once, but I will try again…it just
seemed that when I did as explained in the videos, I still ran up
against this issue.

If at first you don’t succeed…on the other hand…doing the same
thing over and over with the expectation of different results…isn’t
that the definition of insanity  I am hopeful, however, that I will
find that I have missed a step or two…so I won’t fit into that last
category (insanity :)0

Dear Helen:

Do you know that you can use Select in the Rollover and use a separate
Photoshop jpg or gif file for each of the three Rollover states,
Normal, MouseOver and Click?

Start by the making all three rollover states in Photoshop and saving
them as individual Normal, MouseOver and click .jpg files. Draw a
graphic box in Freeway Pro for the Rollover and put in the Normal jpg.
Next click on the Normal graphic and with the Actions menu select the
rollover action. Click on the little arrow next to MouseOver and open
Select, browse for your Mouseover.jpg image and click the Open button.
Do the same for the Click state in the Rollover action. Voila! No
three state alignment to worry about and you can move, cut and copy
these rollover buttons easily.

Hi all, well, I think I have found the step(s) I missed and also a crucial error in my understanding of the basic Freeway interface! (I watched FW Moments again and stopped it as I noted each step)

Here are the “steps” I took–let me know if there is something you think I am (still) missing!

1–Major issue Number 1–Select background elements and be sure they are NOT set to combine graphics. (These are the graphic items the rollover buttons will sit upon) This is a biggie for me as I DID NOT do this first time around!

  1. Import the images for the different button states

3 Select the states and center align them (both vert. and horiz.)

4 Group the items

5 Change the “view” from SITE to PAGE. (click the bar above the default site map pane) MAJOR ISSUE NUMBER TWO-- You will then see the items on this page, with the Group shown as “item1a” and with the graphics IN that group indented below. From what I have read, this “group” actually is a “parent” with the items in the group as “children” This parent-child relationship in Freeway is one of the major misconceptions I had in FW. (I use Photoshop, Indesign and illustrator primarily)

  • as an aside, I tried to change the name of the group to HomeGroup to be more descriptive. When I did that, the background elements suddenly combined with my button, and I was unable to move the items…not sure if this is normal or if its just another mistake on my part??

6 Major ISSUE NO THREE–Click on each “child” item, go to the inspector, and click “lock” This LOCKS each child to the parent and allows the items to all be moved together…this solved my problem with not being able to move the rollover buttons and duplicate them.

7 (Problem number 4–not AS major, but very useful!) Use the page view to select the group (by clicking on the parent name) then start the “creating a rollover” process as demonstrated in Freeway Moments

**MAJOR ISSUE NO 5–OUTPUT–My Background elements are gifs. I wanted a transparent gif on top, so the buttons appear to float on the background. My images were psd layered files and the automatic setting for output for such files is jpg. At first, my rollovers showed my image as a rectangle, with a the background color of my page. I went back to the group, selected each child in the group and made sure they were set to output as gifs. This solved my problem and created the rollover image I wanted. (maybe the background output doesn’t matter?)

Would png work as well as gif for this? Any ideas welcome!
Thanks!
Helen
