Publishing help!?

Hi

I am new to Freeway and I am trying out the trial version and if all goes well will buy version 5 express. I have constructed a web site, was able to look at it in preview with Safari, made sure my first page’s file name is index.html, I can upload my pages to the “sites” folder of idisk but I can’t seem to publish them. When I hit the publish button nothing happens - no messages, no warnings, no action at all. Any help would be much appreciated.

What do you mean “publish” them? Do they load up on your iDisk, you just don’t get any visible files on your actual hard-drive disk?

By publish I mean I am trying to get the site onto my .mac account. So when I hit upload from Freeway I directed it to do so to .mac. It did not publish the site at my .mac address but sent all the files to my “site” folder of idisk. Can I publish them from idisk? If so I’m not sure how. There is also a folder of what i created on Freeway that has been put on my desktop.

The “publish” button on Freeway under file doesn’t seem to do anything.

I hope that’s more clear. Thanks for replying.

“Publish” is not the same as “upload.” When you publish, Freeway updates the site folder with any changes. When you upload, Freeway updates the site folder and then transfers all the required files to your server. The first time you use the upload command, you’ll be prompted to supply the server name and directory, and your user name and password. For more details, go to page 169 in the Freeway 5 Reference (full manual). If you don’t yet have a copy, it’s a free download here: http://www.softpress.com/support/freeway5referenc.php

Okay, great. Thank you for the big manual. But, I guess, my question is why I am still not able to publish. When I hit the publish button nothing happens.

I have been able to publish using iWeb and rapidweaver but not Freeway…so far.

One interesting note - when I uploaded, it asked me where - ftp or .mac. I chose .mac. It input my user name and password automatically. A little further down it says web address and there is nothing listed there. (But I’m sure if it knows my password and user name it knows where it’s going!)

ummm, my apologies. I’ve found my site. The large manual was the help i needed as I was looking for my site at a different address (iWeb, rapidweaver, and Freeway all publish to different addresses)

Feeling a bit sheepish. Thank you.

When you hit the publish button, Freeway makes an up-to-date version
of your site in the Publish folder. Nothing visible happens, so you
might think nothing’s happening.

I should say, when you hit Publish, the site is updated on your computer’s harddrive. Only when you hit Upload does your computer send the site files to the internet server. As a Freeway newbie, it took me a little while to realize the difference.

Exactly so.

Publish = Freeway generates fresh web pages from your layouts.

Preview = Publish AND the current page in Freeway is shown in a
browser. (Or in Freeway’s internal preview display.)

Upload = Publish AND all new or changed content is uploaded to your
site. (And old content is removed from your site.)
