really offtopic sorry

I contract with a local stereo / tv etc store to help their clients set up their sound systems etc with their computer.

ie: apple tv, airplay, itunes …

I have one client that wants a new desktop and laptop.
You all know my first reaction: a macbook and an imac.

ok, he has asked me for a quote also for a PC version.

his specs required are:

· Would like as “fast as (reasonably) possible, when communicating with the
internet”,

(we have all monitors/mouses/keyboards/speakers needed)

As mac people - what would you recommend for someone that wants the other? I respect your opinions because all of you use these on a personal and business level. In addition to showing good taste and common sense with being Mac people.

I appreciate your input.

I’ve never owned a PC but I have friends who are very happy with Dell (both laptops and desktop) and also the Sony Vaio laptops. If I were looking to buy a PC I would start there. I would also look at PC Mag or similar for the always present computer reviews. That should help narrow the field.

Hi Julie, I am in your line of work and if someone wanted a fast as reasonably possible Windows computer I would tell them about what I use in a local Medical Clinic. We have three 27" i7 iMacs with 6 processors, 16GB RAM with 250GB SSD for primary drive and 1TB HD for 2nd drive. Then I installed Parallels 6 and Windows XP Pro. We use the older XP as medical imaging facilities and local hospitals require XP to log into their systems to view medical records. I have had techs from local hospitals come by to set up their remote access software on my PCs (ha ha) and every one of them has said I have the fastest PCs they have ever seen. I am not sure if XP Pro can use more than 2 CPUs but I went ahead and told Parallels to use 4 processors and 8GB RAM.

And when we turn Parallels off I have the entire 16GB RAM for use on Mac applications.

So your quote would be the cost of new 27" iMac and Parallels (apx $79) and a copy of OEM Windows 7 or Windows XP. Must be XP SP2 or greater to install

One other great option is a Mac mini with 8GB RAM. The Mac mini has an HDMI video port built in so using a big 60" flat panel monitor is as easy as plugging it in.

If a real PC is wanted I would look at the Alienware line at Dell and put at least 8GB or RAM.

Good luck and contact me direct if you wish.

Just be sure when you set this up that you make it clear that you
aren’t in the Windows support business (at least not unless they agree
to pay you $150 to show up and $XXX/hour to hack your way through it).

Urge them to get and maintain a great Anti-virus, Anti-spyware
application and set it to auto-update constantly.

My wife’s office has PCs, and they pay a steep monthly fee plus hourly
to a company that comes over with a fire hose and cleans them out
periodically. They’ve lost entire days of work (busy medical optometry
practice, and they can’t bill the insurance companies or order glasses
and contacts for patients?!) due to virus and spyware infections.

By definition (almost) any Windows PC connected to the public Internet
is infected with something bad of one sort or another.

YOu are so right.

I did make sure he knew I was a mac gal. This guy is moving from Il to WNY and wants a new lap and desk for his home, kids and him. Also, we are setting him up with fios (not me personally) but I am setting the wireless up for the computer and setting up the apple tv and itunes etc.

I have suggested an anti-virus for him.

That is all that I am doing. I want to touch it as little as humanly possible.

I use a 2.5GHz Mac mini with 8GB RAM for my home entertainment center.

Wireless keyboard and a 42" TV and you can watch hulu or netflix or whatever you want.

And at my Surgery Center I have a Mac mini with a 60" Sharp LCD TV so we can look at X-Rays.

Also in the same Surgery Center I have a Mac mini with three $70 USB video adapters from macsales.com to power two 32" flat panel TVs and a 22" Dell monitor with the Magic Touch touch screen overlay. Handles all 3 monitors like a charm.
