reformatting drive

Can I re-format an IDE hard drive which was in a Windoze machine for use in my G4?

How does one go about re-formatting?

Just stick it in the machine, if it is the only drive in there put
your OS disk in, open Disk Utility and go to Erase Disk. That should
be it.

It’s not the only disk in there.

There are two, one with the OS on and one used mainly for data. I think the one with the OS on is ageing fast…very slow response times to mouse, frequent spinning wheel, slow saves, freezes, crashes, you name it.

Then I hope you have a backup!

Also, you should run something like DiskWarrior on the problematic drive. The issue could be hardware, but it could also just be due to disk directory damage that can be fixed. What’s cool is, DiskWarrior will also tell you if it’s having trouble with the disk because there is a hardware problem.

Backed up to a Firewire drive, yes!

DiskWarrior sounds good…but $100?..can buy several hard drives for that!

Might try some kind of disk doctor, though…but pretty sure I just need a new one, it has that feel about it!

It all depends on the value of your data. If it’s backed up, then you’re fine. But if you are between backups, that $100 can seem pretty inconsequential. I have never shied away from investing in great tools – DD is one of those.

If you’ve ever had a drive become completely inaccessible on you and had DiskWarrior make it run like there was never a problem, $100 would be more than worth it. Alsoft isn’t making up those quotes. In fact, we often joked that the slogan for the product should have been, “DiskWarrior saved my @$$!” [cleaned up for list posting]

I’ve had to restore drives from backups (due to having to replace them because of hardware failure) more than once in my life, and it’s not fun. I would much rather fix a drive with DiskWarrior than start all over again.

Lastly, a tool like DW tells you if it’s a hardware or software issue. If it’s software, DW fixes it and you’re on your way. If it’s hardware, make sure you’re backed up, and get rid of that drive.

Thanks for the comments, will certainly look into disk warrior if I have a good month…

But I take it the answer is…yes?..I can re-format a windoze formatted drive for Mac use?
