Can anyone suggest a reliable hosting company? I have my website hosted
on TWO hosting companies and BOTH are down at the same time. I guess at
$6 per month, I shouldn’t expect perfection, but I’m ready to pay more
for better service. Who do the “big boys” use? Are there any
top-of-the-line hosting services?
I like Joyent, Rackspace, and MediaTemple at the high end, Dreamhost,
ModWest, and A2 at the low end. I have had two serious nightmares with
NetSol hosting, both related to PHP/MySQL so I don’t know if that
would bother you at all. But I avoid them like the plague ever since.
They may have improved, but my opinion of them was forged in the fires
of “where’s my site” hell.

Definately not the cheapest, but very reliable hosting.
I use Streamline ( http://www.streamline.net/ ) and have found them to be very reliable. There has just been a quite horrific price increase but I have decided to stick with them for now. It is cheaper to pay for two years at a time.

Sorry you had a problem, but I have not experienced that personally.
I’ve been with them for a couple of years now, with zero downtime, apart from the odd email I get maybe once or twice a year, about three days in advance, saying that my server might be down at 3am on a Sunday morning for routine maintenance, for ten minutes. After James’ last outage a while back, I switched my wife’s site over to them too, and she has had similar excellent service. They even send lovely PDF invoices! Costs me £5/month and I couldn’t be happier.
I know that there are some here that would disagree but I have never
had a problem with godaddy.com that was not fixed in a few minutes.
I have used them for years.

I’ll second the recommendation for Clook. Totally reliable and first
class support. I think they may also offer US-based hosting.
I should add that I’ve had a reseller account with Clook since 2004
and the very few support tickets I’ve made have been answered within
minutes and any problems (usually my own fault) were sorted out almost
as quickly.
I have used webmasters.com for a couple of sites and have had no problems whatsoever. Cost is about $10/month. Have a friend who has a formal web design business and he uses them for all his clients as well.
They now have a US branch and are offering 6 months free for transfers.
I’m coming up to 4 years without any major bother. Support tickets are answered promptly and a couple of times they’ve dug me out of a hole of my own making.
I have been with Have-Host AND Heart Internet for several years now to host my clients sites.
Have-Host servers have been down twice, but getting a quick response to my emails, ichats, calls etc. has not been easy. Plus the cpanel configs are not the most easy to use - but, as mentioned, price is good.
Heart Internet on the other hand have been excellent. I pay £30+VAT per month for as many client sites as I want, all support questions answered v.quickly, config pages great. So a firm recommendation. Only problem was they didn’t like the bandwidth for one of my clients streaming video pages, even though they advertise unlimited bandwidth.
David - I sent you this message via your website: ‘I’m with Have Host. As you know all their sites are down (including mine) and I’d like to change to you guys, but I don’t see how I can since Have Host have my DNS numbers and I can’t get in contact with them?
all best wishes’

I’ve used the tech support a couple of times and they have been fast and good. Use my URL as a referral if you decide to go with them…I’ll get a glass of milk. LOL
