Rollovers a great strangeness

Partly in response to Mike’s post earlier today, I was going to help with
some answers. But encountered some problems of my own problems with
Rollovers and other Actions.

FW 4.4.2 on Leopard 10.5.1 on PB-G4-1.5 PPC

Create new file
Make 3 overlapping graphic items placed on top of one another.
Make them a group
Goto Items/Actions
I don’t see the Rollover action
with or without the CSS button pressed
See: http://www.pgt7.com/rollover/Picture1.png

However if I copy a rollover group from another Freeway 4 file
the resulting item is a rollover, AND when highlighted
there are a very different set of Item/Actions available
See: http://www.pgt7.com/rollover/Picture2.png

I have 2 locations that Actions reside:
See: http://www.pgt7.com/rollover/Picture3.png
See: http://www.pgt7.com/rollover/Picture4.png

If I do a Spotlight search on
| Kind : Folders |
| Name begins with : Action |
It does not come up with either FW folders mentioned above.

What’s going on with the Action selection?

Best wishes Peter

First of all, that CSS button doesn’t change the state of existing
items. It just makes new items start like either as CSS-positioned
content (blue/on) or table-based content (grey/off). If you want to
change something you’ve already created to be layered when it isn’t,
or vice versa, then you have to select it and use the Layer checkbox
in the Inspector palette.

Now, your screengrab shows that you’re not actually selecting one of
the graphics you want to turn into a rollover… you’re selecting
the group container. That’s a totally different kind of item, so you
get a totally different set of actions, ones that can be applied to
it.

Grouping the things together is good if you want to be able to have
the whole construct be layered. The group can be set to be a layer
(Layer checkbox ‘on’) and therefore CSS-positioned, while the items
inside the layered container can be unlayered and able to work with
each other to produce a rollover.

Click directly onto the top-most graphic within your group. Or select
the item in the expanded Site panel list as shown in that screengrab.
THEN try applying the Rollover action.

No matter what items are selected and whether they are layered or not I
still don’t get the Rollover action showing in the menu. I resolutely get
the same menu options as in pix 1 & 2.

The Rollover action seems to be completely missing from the Actions menu.

Strange!
Could you try this:

Make a new graphic box
Fill it with a colour
See if you can apply the Rollover action to it

I know there’s only one object, so all you could do is use the
rollover to hide or shot it. But this is a troubleshooting approach:
simplify and see how things go.

This does get stranger, I created a new file and in there I could create
Rollovers fine. I went back to the original file I’d been trying to add
rollovers to and I could indeed add them.

I did originally have quite a lot of apps open, I’ve closed some of them
since first trying and what do you know I can get the whole set of
Actions including the Rollover one to show!

So could this be a memory problem?

I am building my first site with Freeway, and initially, I had big problems with the rollover feature, even though I was following the instructions in the help file. It would do all sorts of bizarre things, like make half the page disappear, etc when a link was clicked. But after closing all the other programs I had running, and re-doing the page, it stopped being crazy, so it may be related to memory.

However, I do have one small issue that I can’t figure out. If you go to the site I am building, http://bonanzacreekranch.com
you will see when you click on the menu tabs at the top, they switch pages fine, and rollover switches color of tab, BUT, you have to click a SECOND time to get the tab to stay a different color! (indicating which page you’re on)

I can’t figure out why it won’t change color with one click.

Thanks!

Hi ?Roger?

I have absolutely no idea why your rollovers aren’t sticking but I must say that you will alienate a lot of your visitors by using that bit of Javascript window resizing. Apart from the fact that the resulting window is so small! Or are you aiming for the handheld viewer?

You would be much better off implementing a more liquid layout or at least one for a more normal screen size - if that is your target audience.

Nope - the problem will be to do with having graphics that overlap,
and not setting the key elements not to combine. What happens then
is the output is one huge graphic. And your rollovers are simply
JavaScript instructions to swap one graphic for another. If that
graphic has been produced as a huge composite item, the huge
composite item causes the rollover effect!

I think that’s because on the destination page those items aren’t set
to show the different colour item by default. The page just shows
what it is set to show. I think your alternate tab graphic is only
set to show when that item in the new page is clicked.

You need to load the clicked state into the page that you have
reached ie create your rollovers so that you will have up (first
state unclicked), over (mouse hovers over button/tab) and down
(clicked state) states. I use the last one in two ways - firstly as
the clicked state on the original page (not strictly necessary esp
with broadband but I think it is useful for slow dialup users to see
that something has happened before the next page comes up) and then
secondly as the ready loaded state which indicates which page/tab you
have reached. This one is fixed ie no rollover states needed as you
are already there.

It appears your pages have all active rollovers so you are having
click twice to reach the fixed (down) state.

Hope this makes sense - assuming I have correctly diagnosed the
problem…!
Cheers
Pete

As already mentioned by Dave, it would be better if you didn’t resize
the user’s window. I’m not saying window resizing is the devil’s
work; I can provide instances when it is actually a practical and
useful thing. But it would be much beter, if you really want a
specific window size, to open a new window and resize that.

Thanks Everyone! Ok, Ok, I’ll get rid of the auto-resize, I hate it too! but I couldnt resist because of the size of the page.

I looked at your site out of curiosity and found the tabs worked fine
and stayed in colour (and dropped shadow) while I was on each page. I
was in Firefox.
