Is it possible to rotate, say a square, without it doing the rotating at the center of the square. For example a 2x4 laying on the floor and I want to pick it up form one end. It doesn’t spin in the air at the center of the 2x4. Is it possible to rotate an object without it spinning at it’s center?
This is so easy to do in Claris Draw and can not believe it can’t be done in this program but I haven’t found out how to do it. HELP

(1) Get the coordinates of the center of rotation that you want by
going Window \> Geometry and then hover the cursor over the center of
rotation you want and get its coordinates on the upper left hand corner.

(2) Go Object \> Rotate … \> Rotate about and use these coordinates.

However, I don’t know of any short cut.

1. Select Command-Shift-R to rotate
2. Press the Option/Alt key. The cursor changes to a crosshair
3. Release the Option/Alt key
4. Move the crosshair cursor to the desired point of rotation (this is easier if a grid is set).
5. Drag the mouse. The object rotates around the desired point of rotation.
Holding down the Shift key rotates the object in 45° increments.

Thanks to Frank for providing this tip earlier this year.

in addition: alt+cmd will let the “crosshair” snap to grid.

This is indeed very nice for “Free Rotate” but how about the dialog
box "Rotate … ", say 28 degrees?

A bit cumbersome - but possible at least:

I tried it and although it isn’t as smooth as Claris Draw it at least works. Thanks a bunch ! !

That’s what I said I did not have any short cut for.

Would be nice if the Rotation tool has an option that recognizes the manual set pivot point. 😉

Sure would. Something like Option-Click on the desired rotation
center. Or moving the cross-hair from the center to the desired
position.

Let us hope the Creator is listening!

Frank and Schremmer you are right. We shouldn’t have to go through all of what you guys came up with just to rotate something. This feature alone has caused me to not get rid of System 9/Claris Draw on another computer as using Intaglio can be very trying when it comes to rotating objects.
I have one more question for you guys but I’ll start another thread for that one.

Again, thanks bunches as I can now rotate.
