Anyone know about the developers tools in Safari 4

I mean will I have to enable them again or will it happen automatically because I did it for 3.

Also can 4 and 3 co-exist? Don’t want to bin 3 just yet - need it for testing!

No they can’t. Safari is like an iceberg. The part you see is called
Safari.app, and lives in /Applications. The rest of it (the much
larger part) is called WebKit[1], and lives in /Library or /System/
Library somewhere. This is also the part that drives the preview in
Freeway, Xyle scope, TextMate, CSSEdit – lots and lots of apps, in
short.

Once you update the browser, all of these libraries are changed as
well, and everything that relies on WebKit for its browser behavior
will perform differently.

Walter

  1. I am not 100% sure of the naming here; WebKit is the open-source
project that all of these libraries come out of. They may be named
something meaningful like NSWebView or something equally cryptic, but
that’s the general layout on your Mac regardless of the precise name.

What about installing 4 as a different user - is that possible?

BTW I see Developers tools is just a preference.

No. You could install it on a different System, on a separate disk or
partition, and dual-boot, but that’s your only option. I believe that
one of the virtualization toolkits allows you to install multiple OS X
versions on one computer, I can’t recall which one it is. I think
maybe Virtual Box…

So far, the rendering looks pretty similar, just wicked faster.

Does anyone know of any sites or examples where 3 and 4 render differently?

So - what do you reckon - just go with 4?

I’m sticking with 3 until Snow Leopard is released.

I can’t think of anything I create which will break in a compliant web
browser.

For those that suffered from a bug in Freeway’s preview when using
Safari 4 Beta (Freeway uses Webkit, the same engine behind Safari and
other browsers), Apple have fixed the problem in the release build.
The built in preview of Freeway now works in exactly the same way as
it did with older versions of Webkit.

Apple software update

Went to Safari 4 today, very pleased so far, especially with the
upgraded developer tools.

I agree, I like it a lot - haven’t seen any flaws yet, plus it renders
pages really quickly and got 100/100 acid3 test – other may be able to
find the problems, but as far as browsers go it’s a pretty good one.

While I’m sure it has many good points I’m less than impressed, perhaps better with Leopard but on tigger its very slow, Camino is lightening fast by comparison, favicons are not rendered in the bookmarks consistently and ‘top sites’ is no match to Firefox’s add on fast dial. It would be nice also to customise the tool bar more extensively, principally with some spacing.

just my tuppence worth

ps/ Just moved to and sticking with Firefox.

The way you can spotlight search actual “web page contents” in your
browser history is particularly useful, that feature alone is a
massive time saver.

Well I upgraded to 4 but I have lost the Develop submenu that shows how long a page takes to load

How do I get it back?

If it’s the same as 3, then Safari / Preferences / Advanced Show
Develop menu in menu bar
