I have a 4gb Sandisk Ultra compact flash card for my Sony slr.
I notice that when I delete all the images via the Mac (after download, say) that the card only offers 3gb and 700+ kb is “being used”.
I suspect this is one of those .trash things which you can see if you stick the card in a PC - the trash seems to save what you’ve just deleted (why I have no idea!!) But this is not visible on a Mac.
How do I make sure my card is properly wiped clean and my 4gb (ok, 3.74gb) made available?
May be. Try using the Finder/Secure Empty Trash option, and see if
that removes any more cruft. Or just do a quick format in your camera.
That’s what I do with my big Kodak pro SLRs. It’s generally really
fast, because it’s just recreating the FAT table on the card.

I’m not happy to let the Mac delete images from the card, so I always
delete them in the camera. I also use the camera to reformat the card
before an important shoot or trip.
I think reformatting in-camera occasionally is the best way to
maintain card health.
