Scaling objects and path width strokes

I find I often want to scale the path width stroke along with scaling an object (or group of objects). This is possible if one uses the Object > Scale dialog by check the Scale Path Stroke Widths option, but it is not nearly as convenient as using the mouse and a modifier key.

Scaling with the mouse has (to my knowledge) two modifier key behaviors. Shift makes scaling proportional, and Command/Open Apple makes scaling increment by grid size. So it appears that either Control or Alt/Option could be bound to the Scale Path Stroke Widths behavior without causing any problems.

I would really, really appreciate that simple new feature.

FWIW, the option key causes the scaling to be performed about the center of the object and command-click invokes contextual menus (it functions like a right-click). That means we’re running out of modifier keys. I suppose the control key could be used after the drag has begun.

I don’t know if this is as helpful, but the forthcoming version 3.0 contains a preference to allow the stroke (and effects) to scale when objects are resized. This can be configured for all objects or only groups.

I wish Apple would replace the worthless caps lock with a new modifier key.

But it sounds like that new preference should pretty much solve my problem. I generally want to “scale” groups and “resize” objects.

The control after scaling starts would be nice, too, though. Perhaps it could just invert the current stroke scaling behavior defined by the new preference, so it would be easy to modify the default behavior.
