would the Scriptaculous Slide Show action be the correct option if i wanted to trigger a slide show of images as the main background of a website or can anybody suggest the best solution.

You want the background of a web page to be a slide show? If so, you could just make an animated gif and place it as your background image. I would use Photoshop for that, but there are other simple gif animation programs that would be fine to use.
