SCRIPTYLIGHTBOX - QUICKTIME

My understanding is that the Lightbox window needs to know what size to make itself when it opens, but QuickTime and Flash don’t communicate their dimensions until they are loaded into the browser.

Therefore in the actions palette, you can set the dimensions for these content types by entering the largest width and height, and checking the Controller checkbox if you need to add height for the QuickTime controller.

QUESTION:

1- I have a .mov file with dimensions 640x360, if I set the media dimensions in the ‘Scriptylightbox’ action to these exactly, will the resulting opening window that contains the Quicktime player be constrained to these exact dimensions with the option of ‘adding height for quicktime controller’?

Currently, the opening window seems to be fixed at one size, so using the above dimensions there is a lot of white space surrounding the .mov file!

2 - Is there a limit t the size of a .mov file you should use? I have some ranging from 100MB - 600MB - 2GB!!! Obviously I’m aware that’s huge… any ideas on what’s best to do here in terms of how to upload files, speed of upload or is this just a waiting game until files are uploaded on server?

I’m guessing it depend on the server I’m using and the limit I have for this domain etc etc as I have 3 .mov files embedded on 4 pages of my site, so a total of 12 quicktime movies in all!!

3 - As I have 3 movies on the same page, could I jump between all 3 movies NEXT/PREV once opened by using Weaver’s ‘Moo Slimbox’ action? Or will the ‘Scriptylightbox’ action cater for this as it can handle Quicktime and I’m unsure whether Weavers will?

Are you streaming these vids or embedding them? Curious.

Embedding them Todd, no live content!

Yes, but you cannot control which instance of the Action will be the
last one to run on the page, and the last one “wins” – its settings
are carried across all of the QuickTime or Flash elements on the page.

Yes. But see above for the gotcha – so will all the other windows for
plug-in media.

using the above dimensions there is a lot of white space surrounding
the .mov file!

It depends on how interested your visitors are in the movie, frankly.
Some people will stare at a loading animation for quite a while,
others get bored and leave immediately. I would try very hard to stay
under 6 - 8MB for each movie, that’s about the size of a well-
compressed movie trailer (small or medium size, not HD). If it’s
anything longer than that, it probably belongs in a “download this and
play it at your leisure” link, so they know to slope off for a coffee
while it stores on their drive.

Unfortunately, while the core library used in this Action
(Lightwindow2) supports this sort of previous/next linkage, I disabled
that in the Action because I couldn’t figure out how to map it to the
Freeway interface. If you choose to go with the Moo-based tools, then
make sure you don’t have any of the other Scriptaculous effects on
your page. A quick way to be sure is to view source, then search for
the word scriptaculous. If you hit that anywhere in your source, then
you cannot use Moo anything without every effect on your page breaking
horribly. I am not sure if the Moo lightbox stuff works correctly with
QuickTime or Flash.

Thanks Walt, its a shame about the Lightwindow 2 guys, this was a great resource!

Basically the window will only go as small as the smallest element on that FW page, shame but I can live with that.

I don’t believe the Moo lightbox stuff works correctly with QuickTime or Flash, I have had a look and can’t seem to find a way, even in Weaver documentation.

I haven’t seen him on here in a while, but if he or anyone can please advise on a way this may be possible, that would be terrific!

Basically a quicktime light box gallery, preferably Scriptaculous too!!!
