Scroll bar, curious

A scroll bar shows up on my cover when there’s no place to scroll. I’ve checked the pasteboard and the master associated with the page and can’t find anything extending beyond my 680px depth. Other pages on my site with similar dimensions don’t show the scroll bar. Only slightly distracting, but I’d like to clean it up.

Thanks very much.

Britt

Eight minutes after asking this question I thought of a possible solution. I had some HTML at the bottom of the page, not visible. Free Counter. Removed it, all is well. Will soon put it back. Thanks.

That’s odd. The FreeCounter Action just adds a DIV to the bottom of
the page, but doesn’t size it or position it in any way. It should
not affect your layout at all. Its contents are a single 1px square
image. Was this the Page Action form of FreeCounter, or the “draw an
Action-item on the page” form? Neither one should do this, but I can
see a possibility of the second one being placed somewhere that it
could affect the layout.

Walter,

It was the Page Action form. I selected “Top of page” after reinstalling the Action and still got the scroll bar. So for now I’m not using Free Counter but would certainly like to be able to reinstall it.

Thanks.

That’s odd. Could you please post the URL of a page where you are
using it? I’d like to figure this out. Also, could you try bottom of
page (default) and see if the problem persists?

Walter,

I use Free Counter on one page only, my index page.:
www.veritas-anydaynow.com

I’ve tried it now with “bottom” as the position on page and the problem does persist. But I’ve uploaded my page again with Free Counter installed so that you can see it. I’ll leave it up throughout the afternoon California time.

Thanks,

Britt

Julie,

The counter isn’t supposed to be visible on the page. The count is accessible by logging in to the Free Counter site.

Walter,

I’ve just installed Free Counter 2 with the same result when checking the page on my browser locally, without uploading.

Thanks.

Okay. This is easily solved. The reason why it is happening is that
the counter pixel is being placed outside of the main page DIV, which
has been given a min-height of 100%. So your page DIV is being drawn
as 100%, and then the 1px div below or above that is added, which
adds up to more than 100%, which means scroll bars on even the
shortest of pages.

Is this min-height something you did manually, or through an Action?
If this is stock Freeway behavior, I will need to update the Action
to move the pixel inside of that DIV.

But what you can do right now would be to use the “draw on the page”
mode of the Action. In the toolbar, choose the Action tool. Pull down
the tool picker to FreeCounter2. Draw a little box somewhere on your
page (this will add a little DIV with a single-pixel GIF in it, so it
won’t interfere with anything), and enter the Site ID in the field
provided in the Actions palette. Delete the page-action version of
FreeCounter2.

Walter,

I’ve corrected the problem per your instructions–no scroll bar. Truth be told I know nothing of “minimum height behavior,” but my guess is that I somehow did it manually–I use very few Actions.

So the problem has been solved and I’ve re-registered on your site with Free-Counter 2.

Thanks very much.
