Search feature help

My client has aked if it is at all? possible to have a search feature implemented into the site i have built.

This is NOT an external search feature, purely to search the site internally for info etc on the site its self! Say a particular article for example!

Is this possible? I have looked all morning and found sweet FA… I have tried atomz.com and have not recieved anything back in 2 weeks so they are not a consideration!

Or is this a no goer??? myself I can’t see why they need it, but I suppose the only thing I can relate it to is the search feature on this forum at the top of this page!

I already have a form on the page, so will this effect the search feature in any way?

Search can be particularly hard to do well. Most of the (free,
install-yourself) solutions out there are incredibly hard to set up
and get working correctly. Sphinx (which this forum uses) is
incredibly powerful and does an amazing job of returning relevant
results. It is also very very configurable. But it has a
configuration interface only a programmer could love.

Have you looked into Google’s personal search solution? They have a
way where you can configure a particular site search and then embed a
little JavaScript in your page, and presto – instant google-powered
search of your site. It’s very plug-and-play, and free, although
there may be some limitations on what sorts of business sites you can
use it on.

I believe that Yahoo offers a site-search facility as well.

As far as your form goes, yes, that will be an issue. You would need
to use the Multiple Forms action to segment the page into more than
one form. By default, Freeway wraps the entire page in one form tag,
and form tags cannot be nested. The Multiple Forms action fixes this.

Hope this helps,

Walter

All our hosting packages have a “Website search” script available, this is a one click install from the control panel. Once installed in a directory, its very easy to set the script up to search the whole site and bring back results (you can also disregard your choice of pages).

Some code is available to pop in your Freeway page as a HTML insert, to access the search results on the search page.

The script and others are in the control panel, and you can take a free test drive here:

Hi David,
How easy is it to have the search results appear in a Freeway designed page, rather than its own? Is it possible to embed through a Markup item on a Freeway page?
Thanks,
Richard

Richard,

the results are generated from a .cgi page/file. So you’ve got a couple of options.

  1. edit the HTML in the .cgi, to format the page (probably the easiest - just changing the styles keep it simple  All the search links refer back into your site anyway.

  2. Or as you say embed the script into the page, using a Markup item and calling the Freeway page the same name .cgi (you’ve got to consider how this is single page is published into a different folder in your hosting - some coding work is required or at least understanding how to chop up Freeway code to make it work in elswhere)

I need to look closer at the script to confirm fully, as some scripts for example call a header, body, and footer (creating a page from file segments of html), and combine then to create a single page.
