Selecting HTML encoding

In the document setup there is a tab to select HTML encoding. Is there any reason not to select HTML5? Or any logic to selecting an older version?

The reference manual seems to imply you should use 4 to support “older browsers”

Just select HTML5, you’ll be fine.

SHORT ANSWER: I don’t think there are important reasons to not go for
(X)HTMl5. However, if you do stumble upon browser rendering issue, it
might occationally be worth it to try Freway’s non-(X)HTML5 output
opution.

LONG ANSWER:

Generally speaking, and if we compare the Web standards themselves
(HTML4 and XHTML1 on one side versus HTML5 and XHTML5 on the other
side) there should be no reason not to select HTML5.

But then, on the other side, there can be details related to the way
Softpress has implemented Freeway’s not-(X)HTML5 output versus
Freeway’s (X)HTML5 output (and Softpress’s implementation, in turn,
is related to (X)HTML5 recommending other solutions to issues that
before-(X)HTML5 solved differently).

Also, if you go for the (X)HTML5 output, then Freeway gives more
options, such as (not so surprsing) the option to use HTML elements that
were introduced with HTML5. The “older browsers” are roughly only
various variants of Internet Explorer, up to version 8. Freeway’s
HTML5 output ofers workarounds for that. However, all incapable browsers
are rapidly falling out of use.

Conclusion: See the short answer, above.
