Show/Hide layer action

I tried it again this morning using Safari and it does flicker, hardly any in Firefox.

anyway I have uploaded a test file with the new workround and it appears fine, I have not tried it in IE on windows, but I will this afternoon.

you can also download the FW file if you like ( right/control click in Safari > download file as, otherwise you get a page full of text )

Hi Guys,

Apply the Transition FX Action to each rollover and set it to Fade the
item with the text on mouseover with duration of 0, and no toggle.

Hope this helps.

But what you do get is the appearance of a smoother transition
between the thumbnails because they are actually graphic items
inserted into adjoining table cells with no gap between them.

The left hand thumb has a section of transparency either side of the
image to fill the cell.

Which brings me back to my question about whether or not 2
adjoining cells could act as the rollover triggers without giving
the text flicker when passing between them.

I know Walter offered some insight into this but I am afraid a mere
mortal like me finds this to be way over my head without a lot of
serious study.

And whose to say that it would overcome the flicker problem anyway.
Maybe that is just how the browsers work.

I think sometimes we strive too hard to achieve something that the
average surfer wouldn’t even notice - let’s face it there are plenty
of abominations out there that Joe Average finds perfectly acceptable.

And so to bed!

Joe, do you mean this advice to be applied:

a) to my original version, with no ‘blanking’ white image
b) Gary’s version WITH the ‘blanking’ white image or
c) David’s table version?

I haven’t actually tried David’s version, as these thumbnails need to
be placed ‘oddly’ and at angles etc, so a table would put too much
structure on them. But I’ve tried it on Gary’s version, and what seems
to happen is that it works a treat, until you roll off all thumbnails,
whereupon the text doesn’t reappear. I do have restore set to ‘yes’ on
that one, by the way.

Actually, this is all academic, as I showed the client two different
techniques, one of which I had no trouble at all with so didn’t need
to ask here, and have not shown you. This morning, he picked that one,
so I won’t be using this technique anyway. Mind you, it didn’t stop me
spending an hour or two just trying to get it to work for the hell of
it

Thanks to Gary, David and Joe for their contributions. When I have a
bit of time, I’ll get to the bottom of all this, but right now, I have
a site to design …

best wishes,

Thanks Joe, much appreciated. This works perfectly but for one thing:
when you mouse away from all the thumbnails, the text doesn’t reappear.

RAPIDWEAVER - Off with his head!

Seriously though a nice clean, simple site but the star of the show for me is his funky furniture.

Is it just commission only?

I’m not sure, but I can find out. He’s actually a model maker, and you
can see his ‘main’ site at
<http:// www.sgmm.co.uk> which WAS done in Freeway, years ago. I’m
ashamed of it now, due to the bizarre and non-intuitive navigation
(the menu items are sections, and the ‘Back’ and ‘Next’ buttons
navigate through the sections, but I’d never do that these days).
I don’t think he does much of that these days; he’s been overtaken by
3D modelling applications.

Paul that would have been a doddle to produce in Freeway !

I tried my technique in all browsers and it worked fine.

can’t win 'em all

learned a bit on the way tho !

PS I just tried this in 5 different browsers and it works just fine ( apart from IE5 on the Mac where the images appear above the thumbs )

Blimey. If I had a bob for every sheet of 5x4 I’ve shot over the past
40 years, I’d be rich. Wouldn’t like to see it back though, I like
digital too much … although I do miss camera movements somewhat

tut tut !! blasphamy ! photoshop is brilliant but to me as an old timer ( 55 ) real photography meant doing it right when you took the shot, post production was for Hollywood

I love PS though and it has changed the way I do things as I now tend to think ahead of what I might do in PS later. doesn’t make the work that much quicker though some days.

as for the 5x4 thing, I can’t get used to working with images the right way up in the viewfinder, spent 25 years working upside down !

now if I could get an adaptor to put my Canon 5D on the back of my Sinar P2 that might make it worth something !

Cheers Paul,

could be very useful that, I know you can get a Hasselblad adapter for the Sinar, but a Canon one could prove very useful for a project I have in mind, even a home made one.

The other article on the site about making a digital pinhole camera is interesting too.
