Does Sketch have any advantages over Illustrator ? I see it can offer up the CCS attributes - is this a good thing ? Anything else ?

Primary advantage is you don’t need a second mortgage to pay for it (or pay for the upgrades to come).

It’s a different beast to Illustrator. I find it by turns huge fun and incredibly frustrating. I put that chiefly down to not spending enough time with it.

So far, I have used it to create some iOS style buttons for a client site. The way items can be nested inside each other (as can be done, more or less, with Illustrator) has been a revelation, as it made masking so simple (which is not something simple with Illustrator).

I like having it around, and at the price it’s a bargain. Whether I’d recommend it wholeheartedly as a full on Illustrator replacement, well, the jury’s out. I also have Mapdiva Artboard in my arsenal, which is much closer in use to Illustrator. I guess Sketch and Artboard together cover most of the bases I need.

I use Sketch pretty regularly and I’m always surprised by how much I enjoy using it. I don’t think it was ever intended to be an Illustrator replacement but more as a vector-based PS replacement for UI/UX designers. The devs worked the PS angle more than anything else and in that regard I think they’re off to a strong start. There has been a steady stream of improvements and while I find it a little buggy at times it’s still usable. My biggest disappointment is with import/export which seems weak but I’m sure that will be addressed in time. And the CSS feature is pretty cool too, and a time-saver when dealing with fairly complex designs/code.

It’s well worth $50 and if it’s still on sale for $29 then there really is no reason not to buy it.

Thanks for the feedback - it would seem an offer not to be missed. A gift to myself for Christmas.
I do have AI CS5 but now looking to other things. The CSS attributes attracts me especially after reading your thread Walter ( ‘Design Craftsmanship on the Web’ ) about looking at code as I build sites in order to get familiar with what is going on as I draw, place, colour-in, animate and label my pixels.

Best wishes - and Joyeux Noël !

I’m a little late to the party, but I’m a firm fan of Sketch.

Currently, I don’t have Illustrator, so I can’t compare it to that app. Sketch is one of those programs that is very basic in regard to the number of tools, but yet very powerful once you learn how to use those tools on top of each-other (hmm…sounds a lot like Freeway actions). I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase it for that price.
