Some One Actually Reply? Publishing.

Finished my site…uploaded it, but I went to the site address, and the old version of the site is still there. How long does freeway take to publish the site?

Do you have an FTP application, like Fetch or Transmit or the free (but oddly-named) CyberDuck? It can be helpful to look in your server’s site root and just make sure that the files are all whee you expect them to be. Freeway’s built-in uploading works extremely well, once you set it up correctly. If you don’t put your site files in the correct folder (usually a sub-folder inside your account folder on your server) then the page won’t load. You also need to check with your hosting provider to be certain that their server is configured to use index.html as the site root file (99.999% of all servers are, but there’s always a couple of jokers in the pack).

Did you clear the cache in your browser? Just a thought?

You need to check two things:

  1. Make sure that the home page you are expecting to see has a filename of index.html
  2. You are uploading to the correct directory. Either check on your server manually like Walter mentioned, or take a look at the details your web host sent you to find out what directory you should be uploading to.

Also, some ISPs cache web pages. So even if you upload your site, you may not necessarily see the change immediately. This causes no end of confusion with clients who are seeing cached data even after you’ve uploaded something new.

First - as others have suggested - check that the files are where they should be on the server using an FTP client. If not, you’ll need to re-upload and try in the browser again. If they are correctly located, then you may be up against some kind of cache. ISP caches can hold on to data for about a day.

There’s no real fix - refreshing your browser won’t make a difference here. A good trick is to put a ? at the end of the URL to the page: www.mysite.com/index.html? - this will generally force a new fetch of the page. Obviously, you won’t want to circulate this URL as it’s just to help you see what’s there.
