Standard Page Actions for All FW Docs

Are there page actions that should be included on all or most all of our FW documents? For example, I used to always have the anti-spam action on every file. I don’t need that anymore, but are there some others that you use automatically?

I use the External Stylesheet Action on almost all my projects because I use CSSEdit on the side to compensate for the lack there-of. I usually use Upload Stuff for uploading any outside files and recently I’ve been using this page title re-namer so I don’t have to input the same prefix in-front of all my pages. A real time-saver on a 100+ page site.

Those are my usuals.

Dan, do you really mean an External Stylesheet Action? Or, do you mean
checking the box in Document Setup>Output that says External
Stylesheets? I haven’t found an External Stylesheet Action, and I’ve
been looking through all my usual bookmarked Freeway action pages.

Oh, this is it here: ESS-Convert to Style Sheet
http://actionsforge.com/actions/view/23-ess-use-external-style-sheet

Sorry so stupid.

Yeah, that’s the one. I use that one with almost every project now to compensate for the hassle of Freeway’s CSS interface. Instead of making a new style, clicking on extended, and typing in the attribute and property and then going to the next one…it gets boring. So, I use CSSEdit on the side and do everything easily in there and then just copy and paste.

I also get a Live Web Preview in CSSEdit so I load up the file in there, make over-riding changes, and then cut and paste what I want and then publish the Freeway document. Then back in CSSEdit I hit “command + r” for a refresh and it asks to update my current open CSS file, click yes, and then keep going.

I find this a great way to be able to understand how you’re building your site by putting items in the Freeway CSS panel that are going to be affected site wide, or using the Action if it’s page specific stuff. Plus with CSSEdit you can see the outcome before you paste it, thus over-riding hours of publish, try, fail, try to fix, publish, fail. You get it spot on.

It’d be nice if the action supported the creation of more than one style-sheet attached to the document. Then I could have a sheet for all my site-wide items and then another sheet for page-specific items. Thus alleviating the need to use the Freeway panel.

Perhaps who-ever made it could have two or three possibly?

I’ve thought about that from time to time, it wouldn’t be that hard. Another addition would be a picker for media type per sheet, so you could have a real Print stylesheet for that “printer friendly” business.

I’ll see if I can get that in there too.

I’m realy interested in the “printer friendly” part of this discussion.

I don’t get it. How do I access my styles now? I’ve created my file in
CSSEdit, added the convert action to my blank page and pasted in my
CSSEdit styles. But, where are they? How do I apply them? I’m missing
something here, obviously.

You use the companion ESS - Use External Stylesheet to attach the
stylesheet you just made to each page.

Further, if you have a few little tweaks to add to a page, the ESS -
Use External Stylesheet Action has a handy editing window where you
can paste in a few snippets of CSS for just that page. These will be
merged into the head of the page to which the Action is applied.

Do you want me to add you to the project so you can post updated
versions of the Action to the Forge?

It’d be great also if you could attach individual sheets to multiple pages that already had another sheet attached to it.

So for instance if I had a bunch of page specific changes I could attach that and then have one for site-wide changes that could be attached. I think a safe bet would be two-2-three possibilities so people don’t get over sheet crazy. Plus the print idea is great as well.

I look forward to seeing this update, if possible.

Nice thread.

I’m new to FW5 Pro and started another discussion asking about external stylesheets and got great answers/feedback.

I totally agree about multiple stylesheets – one for layout (positioning), one for say colors, typefaces (fonts), script styles, IE6/7… Sometimes this works best for page-heavy or intricate sites with a lot of content or design elements especially with many many pages.

Love the printer stylesheet idea.

I haven’t tried CSSEdit in a while and recently discovered CODA which has a beautiful interface and great preview. Perhaps I’ll try Dan J’s method for the time-being.

Dan J – I may have to pick your brain in more detail if you don’t mind!

Thanks!

Pick away, I use the EES action and the Remove DIV style action for all my projects. Makes it easier to design a website and have other people be able to edit it in Dreamweaver and use it.

Well, I was hoping I wouldn’t have to bring this up again to show how
stupid I am, because you talk about it like it’s a given, but I simply
cannot get this External Stylesheet action to work. There are no
instructions, implying that it’s so simple that a DUCK could do it,
but I sure as hell can’t. Somebody, please, help me!

I have created a blank page and called it main.css and added the
Convert o SS action. I have on that page an HTML box with all my
styles from CSS Edit. I have a test page that I applied the User
External SS action and I select the css.css page.

Where, pray tell, are those styles? There are no additional style
sheets available. I don’t get it. And for good measure, I added all
my styles to the Extra Styles area, but still there is nothing
available to me but the FW styles.

Dan, for god’s sake, do a screencast on this! Am I the only one who
can’t get this?

I just wrote out a rather lengthy procedure but since I’ve gotten a few questions on this topic I’ll put together a screen-cast tomorrow for it and then notify this topic about it.

It’s a step by step process by the end I know you’ll get the hang of it.

An update on the screen-cast is that it’s done. I’m having a hard-time getting it to post properly on FreewayCast.com.

So with that said there’s a mediafire link (I know, I know Keith) about it on my site post. Once it does get uploaded I will post an announcement thread in the forums.

Hi Dan

Downloaded the file but got an error message when trying to save it!

I just tried re-downloading it off the link on my site and it started downloading. Did you put the password in on the media-fire box?

Hopefully we can get the Freewaycast.com situation fixed and then it will be easier for everybody.
