Hi Frank
I guess you’re quite correct, otherwise why would we need to renew domains? I have often wondered if I entered a search for a few different names would that be picked up and registered by providers. There was one I searched for today and it was being offered at a ridiculous price by Godaddy. I guess if your friend wants to retain a website with their own name they should register it. I helped out a real estate agent recently whose website designer hadn’t bothered to let her know that her domain name was going to expire. Now I know that Godaddy give several warnings so they couldn’t have missed it. For a while she was quite worried as the domain is her own name and that is how she markets her property sales. I managed to help her somewhat and eventually she got it back but after a long wait and paying extra fees.
kind regards
Elizabeth

Elizabeth,
I was explaining this process to a friend yesterday that may have me create a web site for them, and correct me if I am wrong, but I emphasized that one never owns a domain name, it is more ‘rented’ or ‘leased’… Since they are considering using their own given name it is important they know if it expires registration they might loose the exclusive.
Funny, they wanted www.nick----.com but will have to use the long version as www.nick—com is registered in Amsterdam already (we looked it up). A word about ‘privacy’ may be in order (what do you think), as we could have called, knocked on the door, sent a singing telegram or email virus requesting the domain name in ‘common’.

Thanks for bringing this up Tammy,
It’s been an interesting few hours since reading the first link on this topic. I have since renewed the name that was about to expire and then bought the .info version too as I saw that others had registered the name with other suffixes. So thank you! This is also a website for school education, but different to my main site schooldaysmagazine.com
kind regards

I trust GoDaddy - I actually tried the name I wanted in the url field of the browser. Later I read that that’s a bad idea! I definitely learned from experience on that one! I think it’s odd, too, that the owner hasn’t responded to my inquiries.
Since we’re on the subject of domains - I obviously decided to go with .biz although I also have .net and .org. I work with a lot of school districts and sometimes (I think a lot of times), my emails are blocked and I think it might be because of the .biz on the end. I just bought .me. I’ve used .biz for 3 years and my business is building up. Should I try to switch to using a different one? .biz made sense to me at the beginning because it’s my business, but I don’t like worrying that my emails may not be going through.

Since http://inspiredimpact.com is now a parked domain name, it would seem they are holding it for resale. So, it is interesting they won’t respond to your inquires.

P.S. I have used GoDaddy to search for unused domain names and have gone back later and I found they were not taken yet. So I conclude GoDaddy is not playing that game of snagging inquires for themselves for later resale. YMMV

Glad you bought it right away. When I was considering a name for my business, I tried .com and it was available. Didn’t go back to purchase for 2 weeks and it was gone. 3 years ago and they renewed last year and I still can’t get it. Owners won’t even respond to me. But you can see I do have several of the others - but I really want .com since it’s so common!

This (not Vistaprint, but a “check your domain tool”) is why I still don’t own walterdavis.com. Last I checked, it would be hundreds of dollars, just because I used a web form to see if my domain was available back in 1997.
When I was getting ready to register a domain, instead of using anyone’s “helpful” domain search tool, I tried typing the domain into my browser to see if it was already in use. Nothing came up, so I registered it.
My trust in all things related to the Internet erodes a little bit each day.
