Could anyone suggest how to get rid of the Times NR text (ie. item1) that appears in place of images before they download, when the page appears in a browser. I have deactivated “alt text” in the inspector, but the text still shows up when the site is live.
On some slower download speeds, the entire page initially appears with Times NR text all over it, slowly being replaced by the images as they appear.

Try removing the alt text from those images. BUT - remember that
those can be very useful both when images don’t load for some reason
and for people with certain visual disabilities. Leave what’s
important to explain the structure, and make sure they say something
sensible.
You can make this a little less ’ ugly ’ using the ‘Alt text style’
action.

If this is really the case then maybe your page is too graphics heavy - are you using lots of graphic text and large images?
And as far as your alt text appearing goes - remember that most of your viewers out there on PCs are used to seeing it - especially when they hover.
As Keith says, what is more important is that the alt text that you use is meaningful ie item1a could be ‘picture of a horse’ etc.
Remember that some people totally rely on alt text to make sense of your site. (At this point Ernie usually chimes in about accessibility) so it can’t be stressed too much how important it is.

Is there a way to use spaces, punctuation and uppercase letters with
alt text- or am I just missing something?
Absolutely! Make sure you’re actually editing the Alt Text field, not
just the title field. Type what you like, but try to keep it to a
medium-to-short sentence at most.
And, when I go to Page>Alt Text… is that showing me all the instances where alt text is used or needed? Can I assume if it’s all OK there, it’s OK everywhere (per page, I know)? Is there a site wide why of checking?
Can I change the names right in the the Alt Text… menu item?
You can apply it to one image then select if you want to use it for
that image or all images on the page.
You can change the names in the ‘Alt text’ field of the inspector.
