streaming to TV

Very off topic!
I’ve been asked if I know of any way to stream files from a pc or Mac to a TV, and what bits of equipment might be needed.
Initially it would be for music and movies in their iTunes library, but in the future they would like to be able to surf the net through the tv, so any help would be appreciated.

Networking and pc connections certainly aren’t my strong points, but I said I’d look into it for them.

thanks in advance

Julie, Nathan thanks for the pointers.

Excuse my ignorance, but not having a keyboard, how do you navigate
the internet an Apple TV?
(Am I really behind the times here?)

There are a number of commercial and open-source applications that can
turn a budget PC or a Mac mini into a “Media Center”. These would all
work with the host OS more directly (so you could use the wireless
keyboard), but would be less polished in more normal TV-watching modes.

When not playing a movie from the hard disk or a DVD or the network,
your Media Center would basically be using the TV as a physically
large but ironically very low resolution display. (1040p is a little
bit smaller than the first Mac I used, which was 1280 wide, IIRC. This
was a Mac IIci, in 1989 or '90.

Julie, Walter, thanks again. That helps a lot, at least I’ll be able
shove a suggestion at them now.
