Synchronising files using FTP

Hi folks,

I’m currently evaluating Freeway Express with a view to purchase and I have succeeded in replicating one of my existing sites which I designed using the much maligned FrontPage (I am a refugee from Windows) I have uploaded the new site using FTP but I notice that all my old FrontPage files and folders are still there on the remote site. How do I get rid of them? Should I just delete all files/folders and then re-upload from Freeway?

Should I just delete all files/folders and then re-upload from Freeway?

What I would do is create a new folder on your server (using FTP) - called ‘old site’ for example - and put all your FP pages etc in there.

Then use FW’s built in upload feature to get your new site onto the server.

Once you have done this then FW will only upload changed files which it’s internal system keeps track of for you.

Once you are happy that you do not need any of the old files any more you can trash the old site folder.

One point to bear in mind is that any search engines that have already indexed your site will point to the old file names. Therefore, if the site has different file names for each page, your ranking is back to square one, as existing referrals will not find those pages once they are removed from main site.

Where appropriate, you can change the file name for a new page, in the Inspector, to be the same as the one it supersedes.

Colin.

Thanks for the tip, ColinJA. The site is an ‘in house’ site for a golf club Seniors’ Section, so it is not important. Those who need it, know about it.
