Table inside a Table

Can you place a Table inside a Table?

I have tried this with success, however it place’s a graphic paragraph (4px) after the table inside the tables container.

Can this be removed? I have tried left aligned, inline and so on with no luck. Maybe I’m going about this wrong?

Well to be pedantic about it, no, you can’t. But you can place a table
inside a table cell, or TD. Can you post a link to the page where you
are seeing this extra 4px below your inline table?

Hi Walt.

I think your description about placing a table inside a table cell is what I’m doing, but the graphic paragraph still persists…

I’ve posted a link of an TEST I’m working on ATM all be it work in progress for cross browser compatability.

At the bottom of the page are 3 movie box’s. Underneath these are 3 video formats for playing movies - this is to suit the clients requirements.

Under the the first video - Data… - the 3 movie format icons are placed within the table layout itself. No pixels are added, works fine!

Under the the second video - Corporate… - the 3 movie format icons are placed within an inline table with inline items ALL floated left including the table containing the 3 icon graphics that resides within the overall table layout of the site. = 4px are added underneath?

Under the the third video - IT… - the 3 movie format icons are once again placed within an inline table with inline items ALL floated left with the table float set to none. = 4px are added underneath again!

Here is a test link Walt:

http://www.edwardlawlor.co.uk/table/movi-e.html

Please let me know where I am going wrong, as inserting the inline tables has blown everything apart. I have a lot going on i know, so I can take some professional criticism Walt!

PS. only QT movies currently work.

Can you also post a screenshot showing indicating where you are seeing
this spacing? The three panes of video all appear identical here in
Safari 5.latest. Are they all wrong? Your message indicates that you
have tried a bunch of different things in each, but I see them looking
much the same.

Hi Walt,

It looks fine on my FW pasteboard and in Safari 4, Firefox 3 and IE 8. It falls apart in I.E 6 and as my clients traffic is 90% I.E I want to make sure I cover all bases.

Here is a screen shot of what I see in I.E 6

The magenta indicates where the 4px space is being added, due to the second and thirds video box (3 icons table) being added.

Wow. Icky. I think you’re seeing the paragraph space after (margin-
bottom) from a p style somewhere. Freeway always wraps inline images
in a paragraph tag, and I think that’s why you’re seeing this. Create
a new paragraph style with 0px top and bottom spacing, and 1px line-
height, and maybe align:center. Triple-click inside the HTML box to
select all of the text that’s wrapping around your inline images
(maybe four clicks, or Command-A) and apply that new style to the text
to get rid of any spacing issues. Put the border and background on the
outer HTML box, and leave the icons transparent. That should end up
with something more flexible and bulletproof.

Hi Walt,

I’m going round in circles… not good! lol

Yes, correct Im seeing the paragraph space!

I created a new .p style gave it a 0 top and 0 bottom, how do I get a 1px line-height? I aligned center and Command-A works best to select all.

Do I apply this to ALL the .p styles on the page? Or just the video title text?

Here’s a brief list of my working to help you understand what I’m doing, and where I’m going wrong!

1 - I have a table layout

2 - I insert another table (3 cols, 1 row) onto the pasteboard for 3 video icons

3 - Within that new table I insert inline pass-through graphic items containing the image (eg. QT icon) into each column.

4 - Select the new table containing 3 graphic items

5- Copy and Paste into a cell within the overall table layout

6 - Paragraph space appears!

No matter how I float, align or try and change the row height to be 40px, it won’t budge from 44px (+4px)

I have tried, using inline items within a html item - no luck

Even placing inline items within the cell below the video cell on the table layout - no luck

Walt your suggestion to put the border and background on the outer HTML box, and leave the icons transparent doesn’t seem to work either?!!!

Maybe you can explain your method of working for this?

Any time I place anything inside a cell within the table layout it adds the paragraph space?

Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but I have tried everything I know

Let’s start with the table layout. How are you creating that? Are you
drawing HTML boxes while the big layout button is set to Table Layout?
Or are you drawing a Table object on the page and inserting your
content within that?

Could you make a new document with just the elements of this page on
it, and post it somewhere for download? I could take a second to look
at it if you do.

OK, OK .. that is all well and good, and rest assured website wise, i am confunded .. to the hilt.
what i think peter (which is me) needs is this …

i wanna be able to find a nice easy to understand (for gumheads like me) description of just exactly WHEN and eff’n WHRE i ought to have that sacred blue button, and our newly included RPL feature enaged/on/activated/deployed.

i am dorking around with my website ideas, and it just wants to work, not turn into a folding canoe.

sometimes .. i suspect. that if i didn’t hold down the blue button from which all goodness flows, and did not even bother to care what RPL means, i suspect the sun would still come up in the east, and that if i posted my site, it might work just fine. i suspect those kind of dark things …

boy, if i just had something to read i could actually grasp on these most basic subjects. ohhh.. it would be too cool.

cheers,
peter v.

I believe I may have figured it out. I suspect that you are drawing
HTML items on the page with the Blue button off (Gray). That’s fine,
and a great way to lay out your page. It makes it effortless to have a
page which expands to suit its content without elements crashing into
one another.

But this area with the three boxes showing videos is being merged into
the rest of the page layout in a manner which allows elements to the
right of the three boxes to stretch those three boxes out of shape.

The solution is pretty simple. Draw an HTML box that completely covers
the three boxes, starting at the top-left corner of those three boxes,
and ending at a point at least 1 pixel wider than the width of those
boxes and 1 pixel below the bottom of the boxes. Then send that box to
back. What this will do is create a nested table, containing only
those three boxes, and then place that nested table into the greater
page layout as a solid element. This will not be able to stretch apart
in the presence of browsers with larger default fonts or wacky line-
spacing. It will all just hang together and look the way it does in
Freeway.

Hmmm. Crazy. I can’t find it in my Sent box either. I blame sunspots.

What I wrote was this: Draw an HTML box that is at least as large as
the three boxes at the bottom of the page. Make sure that it starts at
the top-left corner of the left box, and that its right-bottom corner
is at least 1px further right and below the right-bottom corner of the
right-most box. Then send this box to back in the layout. What will
happen is Freeway will create a nested table for just this part of the
page, and the elements to the right of that nested table will no
longer be able to destroy your layout. This trick only works in Table
Layout mode (none of the elements in question are Layers).
