text updates from website

I am so sorry, my comment was based on the hijacked thread - I agree - here is a new thread with my question.

I am developing a website for a company that wants to feature and demo new apps for the Iphone. They were wondering if we can set up a action to txt people when a new app in the area of choice is available.

I did not mean to but in - but very similar to what we were wondering.

Thank you in advance

Julie

There’s a lot of variables packed into this seemingly harmless request. If you want to be able to send an SMS to any mobile number, that’s pretty hard, unless you want to wear out your thumbs with an actual phone. If you want to be able to send a text to a single phone, that’s startlingly easy.

There seems to be one company in the US that can send SMS to lots of different providers around the world – http://www.clickatell.com – you might want to poke around their developer section and see if they can offer any hope.

The actual details of what goes on inside the translation from a normal HTTP request to an SMS border on the alchemical. I had a brief tour through the documentation of Kammel, which is an open-source software application for creating your own Clickatell with “an ordinary workstation”. Looks like fun, if you’re good with a soldering iron and AT codes.

If you are developing for the iPhone, you might want to gather e-mail addresses rather than phone numbers – that’s a far less stressful way to connect to someone electronically.
