To or not FTP, is it FTPS SFTP for me?

I’m working on an upgrade for my local schools website. The company which the school is obliged to host its website on does not allow FTP because it think its a bit insecure. Instead we have to use their very restrictive and uncreative CMS template system to upload content.
Is there anyone who can give me any guidance as to whether the other upload options in Freeway necessitate the host server to have any specific setup in order to be able to use them as they are allegedly more secure than plain old FTP?

Any help would be welcome so that the children can see a website which is a bit looser and more child orientated rather than being proscriptive and somewhat limited in its layout.

The title should have read “To FTP or not FTP, is it FTPS or SFTP for me?”

Too much hurry!

SFTP or FTP over SSL is extremely secure. Plain old FTP is not at all secure. If the company wants to provide secure communications between you and their server, they will open up SFTP for you, and you can use Freeway to upload. If they are trying to enforce some vendor lock-in, they will try to keep you using their CMS system.
