TOTALLY baffled on rollovers

Everytime I work with rollovers I have problems even though I am following the tutorial EXACTLY.

The biggest issue is that I thought I could copy a rollover build and use it for the rest of the buttons. When i do that, the rollover actions do not show up unless I click “layer” which the instructions do not say to do.

As well, i will get some of them build, and then they just don’t work. Often, the rollover shows up on top or it just doesn’t work.

Best fix, perhaps, is just say what i am doing and then get simple instructions.

  1. I have a rollover that is three sets of type - same word, but different color for base, hover and click.

  2. I simply want to be able to align, group, and action/rollover this button set and then change the words for the rest of the buttons.

  3. right now I have to ungroup and unlock each one to rename it. By the time I get don – and with all the problems I have – I could just start from scratch each time and save time!

I am baffled on what I am doing wrong.

Hi Skipll,

I feel your pain – rollovers are an area we’d love to make much simpler. For the time being though here are the answers to your questions:

You can access items in a stack more quickly in the Site Panel on the left of the screen, either use the cog menu at the bottom of it to select “Show Items” or click the word Site at the top of the panel to toggle between the pages in the site and the items on the page. With an item selected just hit return and you will get text editing access. Alternatively you can hold Command and Option while clicking on a stack of items to cycle through the stack, this can be a little fiddly though.

The main things to remember with rollovers are:

  1. If you’re using layer items then you need to group them for them to work

  2. If you’re using non-layers then they don’t need grouping but if more than one stack of rollovers is overlapping then they will probably break.

  3. If you’re using non-layers then watch out for other non-layered graphic items behind the rollovers.

Joe,

This helps my understanding on several areas.

My questions remain in a few areas. In particular, it is the behavior I see on the screen that is vexing. I build a stack just right, but when I try to copy it, it is very inconsistent. Sometimes the action does not show up in the actions view box (other than at the group level) unless I click layer. Often, if I click layer, the action messes up.

I am not trying to use or avoid layes; I don’y really understand layers anyway and the tutorial makes no mention of creating layers.

I simply need to better understand how to:

Copy a stack (do i do that on the whiteboard or on the site?) so I can simply make my word changes and not have to re-do each one.
