Just started doing our company website and seem to be having trouble with the most basic things. For instance I have put three linked HTML text boxes on the page, with Verdana text in them. When the page in Firefox the text is reflowed different to Safari.

Nope - and even worse across different OS. There are things you can do to help though. Use px text sizing instead of % and small/medium (relative sizing).
Remember that the linked text box tool in FW does not mean that text will flow from one to the other on the Web. It is only a convenience for layout. At the point of publish those boxes become static.
