With the update to 5.2 today, the ability to create Homescreen icons for the iPhone is now wrapped up within an action. I didn’t see this on here yet, so a simple text write-up should help.
To create an icon here’s what you have to do:
Open Photoshop and create a new image that is 60px x 60px (now I hear 45px x 45px is another way, but I just did 60px x 60px and it’s better quality.)
Set the DPI to 72. Click OK.
Drop in your icon or whatever you want into your new image box.
Then when you’re done doing your thing go to “File » Save For Web & Devices”
In the sidebar set it to “PNG-8”, uncheck “Transparency” if checked and that’s it.
Save as any file-name (make sure it’s PNG, of course) and then select it from the drop down in the Action’s palette in Freeway.
The rounded corners occur on their own (on the iPod / iPhone) as well as the glossy part at the top of the image so you don’t need to do any of that.
I actually used a non-square, large (much greater than 60 px) image and it worked. It was wider than it was tall, so it got cropped in width, but for this particular image, it worked fine.
Looking at what Freeway 5.2 did, it simply uploaded the image to the server with the correct linking on the pages.
So, Dan’s instructions above are the way to go when you want to control how the icon looks, but you can get away doing less like I did.
One thing I did run into sometimes when I was trying to get these touch icons just so, was it seems that Mobile Safari sometimes cached the icons. I would view it by clicking “Add to Home Screen” and seeing what turned up without actually adding it. Sometimes it didn’t change like I expected because of the caching. Watch out for that.
