Tutorial help

I have been trying to make the buttons featured in the Intaglio tutorial on the Freeway website but am having problems. Whenever I apply the gaussian blur in step 5, the effect does not seem to do anything. The tutorial is here:
http://www.softpress.com/products/_intagliobuttons.php
I have done it many times. There does seem to be an extra mention of using Intersect to add make the half button that the gaussian blur is applied-it is mentioned in step 4 and then step 5 again. I checked the blur radius settings and moved it to approximate the tutorial setting-tutorial says 1.453 but I can get 1.476.

The other weird thing is the example uses a transparent gray box. I can only use a normal gray. Is that the problem?

I’m using v. 2.9.7 on an Intel based iMac with Leopard. I had previously tried it on my iMac flat screen with the same result.

Is there something I’m just not understanding. I usually follow directions well!

Thanks for any help.

Yes, they do give the same directions in steps 4 and 5, regarding Object → Path → Intersect. You only need to do this once.

They also fail to mention anything about transparency, but it is definitely needed. Simply select the “half-lozenge”, click on the Color square in the “Fill” tool pane (to make sure it is selected), then use the “Solid Color” tool pane (if it’s not opened, select it from the Window menu). In the Solid Color pane, there is an extra slider for Opacity - dial that down to 50% or so. You’ll also want to make sure that the fill color is a light gray (dial in to taste).

Once transparency is set, I think you’ll see the difference Gaussian Blur makes when the half-lozenge is sitting on top of the full-lozenge.

Hopefully that helps… and hopefully it’s a little clearer than mud. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, and I’m using 2.9.7 on an Intel-based Macbook Pro with Leopard.

Thanks Pablosan!

I tried your selection and it worked great. I was thinking it was going to be easy.

Hope you like your MacBook Pro. They’re pretty amazing. I just got my new iMac last week. I had thought of the laptop but I decided the larger screen was what I really wanted!

Thanks again!

Glad I could help!

I’ve had my Macbook Pro for about a year now, and love it. It’s the 17" and it replaced a 15" Titanium Powerbook (500 MHz G4) that I had used for several years, so it was a significant upgrade!

If I didn’t need the portability, I’d be all over the iMac - it’s a great machine.
