Tutorials for Intaglio?

Are there any online tutorials for using Intaglio. For example, I just saw the user submitted “CompactDiscs.jpg” on the Intaglio site and I’m really curious as to how that was done.

The attachment shows one way of creating the CD. The end result isn’t 100% accurate, but it outlines the techniques.

You’ll need to learn the commands in the Object menu, specifically subtracting one shape from another (Paths), rotating and duplicating objects (Rotate) and making objects semi-opaque (Blends).

The CD outline has a Darken blend applied which allows the coloured effect to show through.
The coloured effect has a Gaussian Blur (Effects palette).
The centre of the CD is 2 circles to which a 3D effect has been applied.

Experiment and if you find a better or easier way, let us know.

Thanks. Worked great. Another question: is there any way to transform a group to add a bit of perspective to it (as if it is sitting flat on a surface going back in space). I tried the Perspective Transform effect which seems like it would be the thing I’m looking for, but I ended up with a result very different from what I was expecting (zooming way out and more like looking down at the group standing up). When I started to play around with the X & Y values the whole group simply disappeared?!?

It can be done, but it’s far from intuitive. Please refer to this screengrab:

The design is a 113mm square Intaglio drawing converted to a pattern.

In the Effects dialogue box, X means distance from the left and Y means distance from the top (see Note, below).
When you apply the Perspective effect, the image jumps upwards and to the right. To bring it under control:

  1. Change the Top left Y value to 250. The top left corner moves down.
  2. Change the Top right Y value also to 250.
  3. Change the Bottom left and right Y values to 0.
  4. To achieve the correct perspective, change the bottom right value to 500.

A vertical ruler helps to define the centre of the design.

Note. I don’t where the X and Y values are measured from. Intaglio’s rulers, Measurements and Dimensions menus and the Geometry palette make no sense at all. I just change the numbers and see what happens!

Pixelmator’s Perspective effect is much easier to use—just drag the control handles.

Thanks again Ian. Got it working now and it looks great and yeah, it sure would be more intuitive if Intaglio would let us grab control handles or at the very least (for all effects) let us select a field and then click and drag around the crosshair symbol instead of having to input values based on guesses.

That said, I’m pretty impressed with Intaglio so far. Using it to create some new, scalable icons for my apps (Apple seems to delight in adding new “larger” sizes). My previous icon work was entirely done in Photoshop. I do miss some of the built-in filters and Alien Skin Eye Candy effects. For one of the new icons I had to create a texture in Photoshop to drop into Intaglio because there just isn’t any way to get the same effect with Core Image (or if there is, I just couldn’t figure it out). Turned out good though… and hey, if I have to come up with a new “larger” size and that texture isn’t big enough, at least I only have to recreate the texture at a larger size… not the entire icon again

When I finish up these icons and update my site I’ll be sure to post a link or mention here so you can see the results of your help.

Pleased to be of help.
Concerning effects, I don’t know Alien Skin, but you might be interested in Intaglio’s built in drop shadows, glows, 3D, reflection and embossing effects. They’re at Effects>Standard.

You might wanna try out Art Text — Typography Design Software for Mac
which has in incredible implementation of the CoreGraphics/QuarzEngine and plays well together with Intaglio.

Cheers

Concerning textures, there are many ways of creating them. The attached example was created in seconds from a screengrab of the 4 icons on your web site (which look very good—nice job).

Paste the screengrab, go to Tile Effect>Eightfold Reflected and drag the sliders—the possibilities are endless. The texture automatically fills the currently selected page size—if it says A4 in Page Setup, the texture extends to those dimensions.

What sort of Alien Skin effect are you looking to create? If you could point us to an example, Intaglio will probably be able to recreate it.

I’ll second Frank’s recommendation about ArtText—superb chrome, brass, bronze, glass effects and more.

It has been a while since I created the existing icons, so I’m going from memory here and could be off a bit in my recollections. In my Framework icon I think I used Photoshop’s Angled Strokes or Sprayed Strokes to add a sort of sketch-like shading behind some elements of a blueprint that is part of the icon. I also used Add Noise to generate an Anodized Aluminum effect on the Framework structure itself. That icon can be seen here: http://www.yenco.com/framework/framework3.html

The anodized aluminum effect is actually more pronounced on other elements of that same page (the site header and various footers). Basically layers the add noise and a gradient.

For my Finance app icon I recall using Photoshop’s Craquelure and/or maybe Alien Skin’s Xenofex Cracks filters on the black leather to give it a bit of texture.

And I think I used a bit of Alien Skin’s Brushed Metal effect in an icon as well. Might have been as part of the keys in the iKeeper icon.

It isn’t a huge deal though. Like I said, I can always create a large graphic of such textures in Photoshop and then use them in Intaglio. I already started doing that on the recreation of the Framework icon and the results are pretty good.

I’ll be sure to check out ArtText when I get a chance.

Actually, I have one other effect I can’t quite seem to figure out. How do you do a page curl with nothing behind it? Every time I try the effect it acts like I have a pad and I’m only curling the top page rather than just a single sheet.

The attachment shows how to do this.

A similar procedure can be used with other CI effects; with some Composite Operations, you can create aluminium, sketch and cracked effects using imported pictures as Source images. The results aren’t exactly the same as Photoshop filters, but some come close.

Anything’s possible with CI, but how to do it isn’t really explained. The basic effects are documented, but more complex chains of effects are more difficult (definitely ‘go figure’ territory). The file ‘Core Image Effects’ in the Samples folder is a good place to start.

Thanks Ian. I’ll try it out. Not sure about the page curl stuff since icons are going to require a transparent background where the page curls (not solid white). For texture stuff I’ve been creating the textures in Photoshop (for now) and using those as my source images with different blend effects and gradients in layers. Core Image definitely requires a lot of experimentation… but I’ve been really impressed with the results I’m getting out of Intaglio with it so far so I think it is well worth it.

OK, cool… I have to fill the graphic with white and apply the texture/picture/image I want to use for the paper but I can set the opacity down to 1% (effectively making the transparent background around the page curl I would need). Awesome
