I for one wish Freeway would be smart, like every other application
I own, and use “smart” quotes for me.
I’m not so much of a fan of smart quotes. I find it far more annoying
to have/see curly quotes where they should be straight, versus
straight where they should be curly. Because of what we’re used to,
one is not ideal whereas the other is just plain wrong. I also hate
seeing a ‘left’ quote mark used where a right one should be used
instead, for example with the abbreviated word 'Frisco, which is what
so-called smart quote features will do. (Although nobody should ever
actually use that abbreviation if they mean San Francisco!
It behooves us all to learn the basic shortcuts to get the right
typographic elements for whatever we’re doing, including en and em
dashes and so on.

True, but I do feel the lack of smart quotes in Freeway makes it feel,
well, so 1990s. If you are entering text directly in Freeway, it kind
of interrupts the flow of typing if you have to use a combination to
enter a single character (accented letters aside).
