"un-cloaking" e-mail addresses on FreewayTalk

I have a request in hand to make it possible for members of the
various forums to be able to see each other’s e-mail address, which
would allow one member to contact another “off-list”.

Right now, your e-mail address is used by the FreewayTalk systems to
send your posts to members who have subscribed to the various lists
by e-mail. Only members who have subscribed and confirmed their
subscription using a valid e-mail address (which is to say, not a
bot) have access to this information. So, while you do not see e-mail
addresses in the Web view, members who are subscribed by mail do see
them.

When you browse the FreewayTalk site without authenticating, you
don’t see a list of members, and you can’t click on a poster’s name
and see their statistics. In addition, all e-mail addresses that
happen to get posted in the body of a message are cloaked.

How would you feel if other authenticated members of the forum could
see your e-mail address on your profile page, and could contact you
directly by e-mail? This would be somewhat analogous to the old
“private message” functionality. Would you want this to be an opt-in
behavior or just the norm?

Thanks for your input,

Walter

I would vote for opt-in, not because I mind showing my email, but because i’m sure there may be some who do mind, and giving the option of choice is always better than no choice.

I’ll second that

Adding this feature would be fine with me Walter.

It wouldn’t affect my sense of privacy, because every member can
already opt to receive all the Freewaytalk messages by e-mail, and
then the sender’s address is always included.

No objections here Walter, sounds reasonable.

I agree with adding this feature.

I think that “uncloaking” should be an option for each individual rather than something imposed. Off by default.

The slight twist on this is that the sender’s address is included in any e-mails received from the point that you subscribe. I would imagine that exposing e-mails on the web forum would be a bit more of an all-or-nothing affair - people would see your e-mail address whether you’d made any posts or not.

The implication which falls out is that you’d then be able to sign up to the web forum and immediately see the e-mail addresses of anyone who had ever posted. This strikes me as probably a Bad Thing™.

The main reason for wanting someone’s e-mail address would be to be able to contact them. If there was a form which allowed you to send an e-mail to them without disclosing their address to you immediately, that would probably make this discussion largely irrelevant.
