Unread messages

Walter,

This is not the first time, and perhaps the second or third time this week, that I can’t get the little red unread message indicator to go away in the forum. All day, I have only been able to get it down to three unread messages, and I have gone through each thread from at least the past couple of days trying to find the three unread messages. Previous times I have encountered this, the only way I could find to clear the count was to unsubscribe and resubscribe to the list.

I have had the same problem from time to time. I will add something
to the My Account page to take care of this. Watch this space. I
don’t know why it’s happening, but I agree – it’s annoying.

Since I don’t read all threads, I have these red numbers getting bigger and bigger and I don’t know how to get rid of them.

I don’t find an indication of the total number of unread messages in the forum section to be useful: I would prefer to see an indication of the number of unread messages in each thread.

That’s not really possible, except maybe at the level where you are
looking at a list of threads. And that view is getting pretty
crowded. Once you have gone into a thread, you’ve already passed over
the threshold, and the system decides you’ve read all the messages on
that page.

I’ll think about it some more.

Okay, if you want to reset your counters, go to your My Account page,
look at the bottom of the Forum Memberships table for a new link
labeled Clean up Unread Counts.

Click on it, and wait.

It takes quite a long time, depending on how many forums you belong to.

Yes, I was thinking of the level where I’m looking at a list of threads. If it’s not possible to show the number of unread messages in a thread, just a flag to show if there are any unread messages in a thread would be fine. I think this is standard in most Internet forums.

At present I can see that I apparently have 1835 unread messages in the FreewayTalk list and 345 in the Off Topic list. This is really no use to me at all: I’m not going to open every single thread just to get those numbers to reduce.

Heh. The counter on the Freewaytalk forum itself currently reads
2,695 unread messages. But of course I always read it in email, so
that’s fine. I’m curious about how far it could go. (But Walter, if
this could cause problems feel free to reset the count.)

No, it’s just going to be interesting to see when you get it up above
7 figures. I forget how wide I made the long half of the red dot. It
will eventually work its way left off of the page.

Both you and Keith – this is a self-serve operation. Click on My

Unread Counts’. I’ve made it all Ajaxy and everything just for you!

It didn’t work. FWTalk is now stuck at 6 for me. I even tried it a second time.

I’ve been fiddling with it. I have managed to reset mine, perhaps a
little too well because my counters never go up!

Could you try yours again just now, I need to look at something.

If it doesn’t hurt anything I’m going to leave it and see how high
the number gets. Whee, there’s another increment! (Simple things,
simple minds, eh?)

I just ran another cleanup function, one that I hadn’t run in a while, which fixes the count indexes. I think what had happened was that the master number for each table had gotten out of synch somehow, and that led to your 6 that you couldn’t get rid of. I also made a couple more changes to the cleanup function, so that it more completely cleans up before rebuilding the “what you’ve read” counts.

So really do give it one more shot.

Stand on me… well done Mr Davis.

After being away for a month or two and seeing I’ve missed 3,000 plus posts made me more than a tad anxious.

Anyway, I’m a happy bunny now as ignorance is bliss and now I’ve deleted the tags I feel cleansed.

Kindest regards
