The finder window has a new view button for coverflow as an option. It actually works well…but it takes a moment the first time a file is scanned that way to produce the preview, and yes it actually shows the content for MOST files. Data files or compressed files are just document icons so far. Native Freeway files do not show a preview of the page, but published Freeway pages do!

If you want to break in gently, all the old finder views, icon and hierarchical included,
are still there (View menu) and you can play with each new toy, one at a time.

Actually that does not affect the Dock, only folder views and finder views.

So .freeway files don’t Quicklook, but .html files do? The Softpress
site clearly shows a .freeway file previewing:

DOH! Wouldn’t ya know it, soon as I say one thing I have to turn around and punch myself in the gut!
Yeeeessss… Freeway layouts do preview after all. I attribute me not seeing it before to my test machine being a bit pokie on system finder refreshes.

Ok, I see why I didn’t see them before. Only Freeway documents saved in version 4.4 will show a preview in coverflow, otherwise you see a Freeway icon.

Spotlight indexing was hogging the machine. I ended up doing some
geeky stuff from a remote terminal to stop it.

It is worth making sure that you let this complete, or you could find
you’ve limited the OS in some way. I had this problem when I first
upgraded to 10.4, but in the end I left the machine running overnight
for a couple of times and I ended up getting full functionality back

  • once Spotlight finished!
(Serves me right for having so much stuff to index, eh?)

The only things I’ve had some trouble with are a few third party
preference panes, like Peripheral Vision. The main functionality of
that one works, but the Pane itself will not load. If it doesn’t get
updated, I’ll probably install growl instead.

Growl is a good tool. I recommend it.

BTW, I will be installing Leopard on my home Mac probably tomorrow.
I’d do it tonight but I have a lecture to prepare. I’ll be holding
off from putting it on my MacBook Pro for now, as that will break the
current NetOctopus software update control that’s managed by college.
I could just go ahead if I wanted to, but it could lead to issues in
a couple of months.

From what I noticed on restart after install, there were several
warnings of font conflicts with Helvetica fonts so it appears that
Apple is installing a new version that causes conflicts that I
haven’t seen before.

VERY interesting. If there are any changes in the font metrics at all
this could cause reflow problems in some documents. I’ll try to
remember to test this out once I have a Mac running 10.5.

People, I have a small request:
Please trim replies so they don’t include tons of unnecessary text.
Thanks.

Ooh, that’s useful to know. I have an Lide 80 and Canon seem renowned
for never updating their driver software.

Cool.

I went and turned the Spotlight indexing back on. I just hadn’t gotten to it when I posted earlier.

Gruber of Daring Fireball thinks font anti aliasing is different in Leopard. This may be what I’m seeing.
