using iMac as screen for MacMini

Just wondered if it would be possible to use an iMac as the screen for a MacMini? I want to run old Tiger programmes but would like to be able to just switch from what I’m doing on Intel iMac to the MacMini…using the same screen.

Possible?

Assuming you have a LAN connecting both machines in some way, you ought to be able to set the sharing permissions on the Mac mini to let you share the screen, and then log into it using the mini’s admin/user name and password and drive it from the iMac.

I do that with an old G4 mini that I use to run FreeHand and the scanner software. I can sit at my usual desk and drive them remotely.

Hope that helps.

Hello Heather!

No I don’t have a LAN. Should I? How do I set that up? Does it use Ethernet cable? (ethernet socket is used by broadband…)

You say: “and then log into it using the mini’s admin/user name and password and drive it from the iMac.”…log into what?..and from where?

Hugh

ps. I run Freehand on my intel iMac…?

It’s all a bit academic if you don’t have a network that lets you connect to other machines, but…

If the mini has wifi, you might be able to set it up to share across that. As long as screen sharing is set up in the system preferences/sharing panel (there’s a checkbox, I think), it should pop up in the left hand column of a Finder window.

From the iMac (you’ll need to activate wifi if you don’t currently use it - and thereby hangs a tale), you click on the new shared computer, and there should be an option in the Finder window to “Share Screen”. Enter the mini’s user name and password when prompted and you will have full access to the whole computer and be able to drive it from your iMac.

I’m guessing from your current setup this might be more complicated to achieve than it should be.

I lost that option when I upgraded to Lion. That’s why I keep an elderly Mac running Leopard. =o)

I’m not sure, would it be? Currently I have an intel iMac and a G5 tower, bother run separately. The iMac was to replace the G5, but due to some preferred programmes not being available on intel I’ve had to keep the G5. Everytime I want to use it I have to switch off the iMac, fart around with plugs and sockets for 5 minutes and then fire up the G5. etc. etc.

My idea is to replace the G5 with a little MacMini which would share the imac screen.

Doesn’t sound too ambitious, does it? Even share the G5 to the iMac for the timebeing (but I do want to get rid of it, takes up too much space).

If wifi is the best way to do it, then I’ll have to learn wifi!

We are in similar boats!

Sounds as if you’re using a wired two-node network where one node is
the modem/router and the other is whichever Mac you plug the other
end of the wire into.

Which solutions are open to you depends on whether you have a router
or a dumb modem.

The simple solution is a router. A router can talk to your ISP with
its address and to your Macs on a set of private addresses that it
will look after for you. If you tell us what you have we can take you
further.

I regularly view my iMac or Mini screens on my MBPro.

Hi David,

My iMac (or G5, depending on which I’m using) both connect via ethernet to a 2-Wire (that’s the brand) router into which my telephone/broadband comes in. Router presumably gives WiFi capability, as my Macbook connected via WiFi to the internet (before the magsafe charger disintegrated last week!)

So if I use the G5, i take the ethernet cable from the iMac and stick it into the G5 (and vice a versa when I boot up the iMac again)

2-Wire have been taken over by Pace. There are four 2-Wire ‘Gateways’
(as Pace calls them on its website) that look is if they have 2-Wire
markings. Documentation is downloadable for all of them.

If your 2-Wire box has multiple sockets of the type you’re currently
using then all you need is a cable from as many as you need to your
Macs. There’s a good chance that just wiring up the mini (and the G5

  • why not) and setting their network prefs to ‘Automatic’ will get
them talking. If not, and you can’t work out what to do from the
    documents, then ask again.

Cables are easy to get. I even got two from Tesco.

Hi David,

Thanks for the info. Yes, my router has several four ethernet sockets. thought I had a spare cable but it’s eluding me at the moment - can easily get another. As you suggest I’ll see if I can get them ‘talking’ automatically.

But do I need to do more than just get them talking? Do I have to share services or such on either/both the computers?

Yes, you’ll have to set up sharing in the System Prefs. Enabling File
Sharing generally makes things easier for all sorts of things. For
what you want to do you will have to enable ‘Screen Sharing’ or
‘Remote Management’. I use ‘Remote Management’ with ‘Computer
Settings’ (button on the Remote Management pane) set to ‘VNC viewers
may control screen with password:’, myself as the only user, and a
password set.

Macs that are shared appear in the LH pane of Finder windows on other
Macs. You can make the shared Mac’s data available to each local Mac
with ‘Connect as Š’ and logging in; or open a window that is the
shared Mac’s screen with ‘Share Screen Š’ and giving the password set
above.

You may have to fiddle with the ‘Displays’ setting on the Mini to
make get the size/resolution you want on the iMac. My Mini lives with
a 19" screen at maximum resolution (for its age) and it won’t fill
the screen of my 17"MBP. I also have a 27"iMac with a 24" extension
screen, which I can show on the MBP but I have to scroll around to
see it all. It would scale down to fit but the resulting resolution
would be poor. The main screen alone may be readable.

David,

Thanks for the info on this - I’m just waiting for an ethernet cable to arrive from Amazon. Will get back to you when I have the hardware!

Just to update on this…

I got my ethernet cable today and connected up the G5 with the router. Then with both iMac and G5 rebooted the G5 turned up under ‘shared’ in the finder of the iMac. I didn’t do anything else on the iMac.

In the G5 prefs I turned on Apple Remote Desktop and provided a password for screensharing via VNC as requested.

Back in the iMac I could now select my G5 in the finder and ‘login’ to the screen ising screen sharing - I then had control of the G5 on the iMac screen. RESULT!!

Only downsides are a slight lag/hesitancy in commands, presumably because it’s going via ethernet which isn’t as fast as the local bus…??

The other thing is I can’t make the G5 screen display any bigger (on the iMac) than the 1680x1050 it’s running on its own Illyama screen (when connected). Whereas my 24" iMac is running on 1920x1200.

Still, not a bad result and far easier than I thought it would be

I’m indebted to David and Heather for their answers and assistance, thanks.

Hugh
